Geely E2 Apex, pull the trigger or am I going mad?

The irony for me. I mentioned the BYD and Geely to my Chinese friends and they said no. After 8 years the petrol car is paid off and will still go, at which you will pay a fortune to fix up the electric car.

So they suggest if cheap the Honda Fit hybrid or the Corolla Cross Hybrid.

If have more money we’ll just get a Mercedes or Volvo (yet Volvo only once 2-3 year old).

They all said from a financial aspect electric may seem great but hybrids will last longer and we’ll Toyota and Honda are the ones to beat.

The Honda Fit Hybrid is 3.1l per 100kms
Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid XR is 4.3l per 100kms

Although the Rav 4 hybrid is the best hybrid engine in the world. And yes Australia and US will agree. Is 4.5-4.8l per 100kms.

Those little I10s does 6.9l per 100km. Hyundai isn’t light on fuel. Even the Suzuki Swift is 4.4l.


Your Fortuner is between 8.5-13l per 100kms. So yes chuck that out and get a Rav 4 hybrid if bigger or the Corolla cross if smaller. You’re cutting your fuel into half or even 1/3rd almost.

Anyway the electric cars to get isn’t the BYD or Geely. It’s the Xiaomis. They have a 2-3 year waiting periods. Cost about R550k for the SU7. But they don’t ship it here.

If you really want a petrol/gas car to last you by a well maintained Toyota or Honda from the period of say just before 2010's till about 2017 (roughly).That is the sweet spot on many levels.

Bonus points for N/A & manual tranny but that is outside the scope of this thread.

Since this is now the Geely E2 thread.

Have a real world trip to compare. Went to the West Coast Fossil park (which I do recommend btw). Trip from where I am to there was about 138km. Even though we could have made it back on the charge we had, we needed lunch for the kids anyway. As Wimpy took forever for the order we ended up doing a full charge, so I have pretty accurate number for energy efficiency.

We charged up 21.245 kwh. So efficiency clocked in at 15.39 kwh/100km. Not super fantastic, but this was basically highway driving and I wasn't really caring about efficiency. Charging cost R148.72 (which came from the R3k from the rubicon voucher from Geely).
So working out cost per km using fast charging ends up at around R1.08 per km. I charged it from the solar next day. So R148 for 276km worth of driving isn't bad.

On the one side I hope you're right because then I can pick one of for cheap, on the other side looking at the current petrol price I have doubt about that.

I think the EV depreciation effect was largely them being f__king expensive initially. And expensive cars will always depreciate worse than cheaper cars due to them always competing with newer cheaper cars. Since EVs are now priced in the same range as their ICE counterparts, I suspect the depreciation rates will normalise.


I mean look at what was classed as affordable previously.

EV's do depreciate due to :

Rapid Technological Obsolescence
    • Better Range and Charging: EV technology improves quickly. Newer models offer much longer driving ranges and faster charging speeds.
    • Outdated Features: Older EVs feel outdated much faster than traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) cars, lowering second-hand demand.

Battery Anxiety and Longevity
    • Uncertainty: Buyers worry about long-term battery degradation and the high cost of a replacement battery pack.
    • Warranty Limits: Higher mileage on a used EV reduces remaining battery warranty coverage, which scares off buyers. [

Government and Manufacturer Incentives
    • Upfront Discounts: New EVs often qualify for heavy government tax credits or manufacturer rebates.
    • Skewed Resale Prices: Because new buyers pay less after incentives, used EVs must drop significantly in price to remain competitive.

All cars depreciate and generally worse than people like to believe.

While the above is all valid, it’s also not within a South African context.
 
So this is now a Chery Q thread... Decided to pull the trigger today. Picking her up tomorrow.

Why the Q and not the Geely?

10 year battery warranty vs 8 on the Geely
5 years Vehicle warranty and service plan vs 4 from Geely
Bigger battery on Q
Automatic trunk and frunk on Q
Automatic parking (my wife will love this)
Feels roomier inside (longer wheelbase than geely)
Heated and aircon ventilated seats (geely does not have this)
Great drive
Wireless carplay and android auto built in (geely is wired)
Wireless charger (geely is wired)

Downsides.

It only comes with portable charger. For now this will be sufficient. Geely has both portable and wall charger included in price.
Geely has a better track record of sales for this model (I would argue that Chery has a better support structure in SA)
All in slightly more expensive than geely. R405k all in with registration and on the road vs 400k with Geely


Given the petrol price jump coming and that we will use this as run around over the weekends and spare the fortuner.... No brainer.

Looks good but those rims are very fugly.
 
I bought the Geely. Its epic. The Geely has more torque than the cherry. To be fair I got my geely before the cherry was even a thing.

E2 has 5 star safety rating as well.

Yes I had to think twice as Q doesn't have a safety rating yet. But given all the safety features I will put money on a 5star rating. Most top tier models from chery receive 5 stars

Yes because its an actual car that can go on the freeways and is not a dead duck. There is one gripe I have it does have a rear windscreen wiper and proper climate control.

Other than that its pretty much a perfect hatch.

I have the apex btw
