Discovery and their insane price increase

I think overall they run an escalator: the top plans stagnate in terms of benefits despite the prices ratcheting up, while new plans appear at the bottom.

The idea is you won't be so foolish as to downgrade (and it's easy to market, just use photos of younger people on cheaper plans) -- but in fact I think in many cases you can safely do just that and in practice receive effectively the same coverage. For the low-end plans you're only getting PMBs anyway.

Bank accounts work a similar way.
Unfortunately that's not the case, the lower tiers have some dire exclusions, no spinal surgery/limited implants/very limited or no cancer cover
Which companies actually offer good gap cover?
Sirago is a good one.

And as witnessed in that other thread about a medical aid I can't remember the name right now - it seemed like switching exposed you to a period where you're not covered. Not sure if it was specific to that ME or not. Made me feel a bit trapped at the time wanting to change. Now they just force these price hikes on you.
I've just come out the switch period and all I can say is Thank F....

These increases are just ludicrous now.

Discovery taking the piss now...
The more expensive plans don’t even cover some of the basics so I can’t imagine what was cut from this plan.

They'll probably offer you GAP cover for the shortfall.
Insurance on top of insurance.

To think they teach these people at business school how to bamboozle your clients.

We're collectively being done in by the food, pharma industry and others, not only in ZA, but elsewhere too.

Did anyone ever ask for less product. They just arbitrarily offer you less for the same money and call it something else while patting themselves on the back.

All of this schlentering came from the US of A, they invented it over there.

This is literally a hospital plan.

The day to day is subject to personal pathways and Personal Health fund which is like vitality for health and doesn't work half the time.

With a stupid POS like that you're better taking the R3750 p/m and paying that into a savings account
And if the family is in a bad car accident and all members need various types of surgery?
In South Africa if you want access to private hospitals you need medical aid, there's unfortunately no other way around it

My father is also on one of the "cheaper" packages of discovery but he is on pension. For him any increase makes a difference

Need to keep up appearances and cleaning all that glass is expensive!

This. Just my elbow and overnight stay at the hospital was R66k.
Yep and it could have been much more expensive, did they have to insert a pin to fix the break?
How much of the rehab/physio are they going to cover?
That is another level of costs, R650 a session and you need 8 weeks of weekly visits, then a x-ray maybe, it just keeps adding up.

Yes some wires that'll have to come out in a years time so more money.

I'm not going to those luckily else it would've come out of my MSA - they cover nothing. Crazy stuff.

Did you have to pay any Co-payments or out of pocket expenses for your hospital stay?
