Rain and storm for Cpt pt 2

Nice breeze has picked up and the roads are drying nicely. Local car washes are already busy.

The SAWS reports moderate amounts of rain in several places in the SW-Cape during the 24 hours to 8am on Tues 6th. Highest include Jonkershoek 18mm, Strand 17mm, Kirstenbosch 16mm, Molteno Reservoir (CBD) 16mm, Slangkop (Lighthouse) 15mm, etc.

The transition from winter to summer can be very gradual in Cape Town, and further cool conditions are likely this week. A well developed front is predicted for Sat 17th, bringing some rain, and possible snow over the high mountains. This chart shows the extremely cold daytime temperatures likely over the SW-Cape:

Long-range forecasts show that the cold-front reaching CT on Sat 17th, will develop into a moderate intensity cutoff-low along the Eastern Cape coast on Sun 18th, and cold conditions will extend far inland by Mon 19th, bringing light snow to the Drakensberg and Lesotho:

Has this arrived today, it's got quite chilly this evening?

Does that mean it's going to get rather chilly when the big one arrives?

I suggest you scroll up in this thread, I already posted twice on this page...

Yoh soo sassy today :p
My bad I didn't read that post but in hindsight I can see I really should have

There'll be snow around so we'll definitely be feeling the pinch

This morning's SAWS ship synoptic chart (Thurs 15th) clearly shows the series of fronts passing CT, bringing cool westerly winds (not summer-like at all!) Only the 3rd one due on Sat 17th will bring any significant rain. The South Atlantic High will push in on Sun 18th, bringing very cold southerly winds to the southern half of SA:

Departing Cape Town yesterday there were some very well defined lenticular clouds over Worcester 😁

Same today (and probably tomorrow). Lenticular clouds occur when moist semi-stable air passes over mountain ranges. In CT the wind from the west produces standing waves. There is insufficient moisture to produce rain (yet), so this can persist for many hours.

P.S. When I see windscreen wipers in a photo from an aircraft, I assume you are not a passenger (/s).

Edit: Some forming over Table Mountain too:

So the cold fronts remembered to make a turn in Cape Town before the season ends. 😂

Cold fronts pass south of CT 365 days of the year. When the South Atlantic High is dominant, they miss CT (sometimes becoming cutoff lows). When the SAH is weak of missing they can reach CT. It can rain any day of the year in CT. It can also snow any day of the year on the Drakensberg. Seasons don't always follow the calendar. It's all about averages and probability. (End of pedantic mode.)

@Gordon_R, I have some eBucks to waste and was wondering about getting a weather station. Do you have an opinion and recommendation on these?

Was looking at this one which seems to be cloned by several manufacturers:

Sorry, I have no experience with any such thing at all. Others on the forum may have more detailed feedback. My general understanding is that they need to be positioned carefully, to get consistent results. Having one in an urban area will introduce many biases, so don't expect your results to be representative.

I have this one,

Not sure about the differences between yours and mine.

Alignment of wind direction took a while to get sorted though; this is the only real challenge you face.
It uploads info to any of the major weather websites (i use weatherunderground) and you're able to check current and historical data.

Welcome to DM me for more information and examples of how the data looks like;

Yours is listed as way more expensive. Seems to be the OEM brand (Bresser). The others are copies/clones...
