R25,000 to take a fake Uber from a major airport in South Africa

I don't use Uber myself but when you order a Uber, doesn't it show you driver information and car?

Why would you go with some random who claims they're Uber? Sure maybe a taxi or some other claim but if a service offers identification, use it.

You have a million cops waiting outside OR Tambo to fine people for anything for example yet they can't stop these guys at airports?
Tourists arriving at Cape Town International Airport have allegedly been scammed out of R25,000 for a single cab ride by people pretending to be Uber drivers.
I found the issue.

*I do agree that the police should step up and do their work in Slaapstad.

Ja well.... if you are dumb enough to think the you are taking an "uber" without using the app for the ride you should probably not complain too much.

But then again this such an easy fix if the police were actually interested in doing their jobs.

I don't understand why the airport doesn't offer some formalised process and then simply fine or arrest anyone trying to pick up rides. Easy to fix.

If you get into a car without checking it's the right car, then karma

Not to worry.

While many westerners from over the seas still struggle with the practicalities of navigating in a low trust sh**hole society, they've done such a bang-up job at importing training into their own countries that soon they'll feel right at home.

Frankly, this is all on ACSA. They are aware of the problem and have made some half-assed efforts at warning people but, nothing about licking these idiots out. Uber uses an app, only allow pick ups not "walk-ins".

It would literally be trivial to have a couple undercover security/cops walk out of customs and towards the exits. Identify every single one that propositions themselves as "uber".

I literally get ask "Uber?" 4 or 5 times as you walk through the airport and towards the ehailing pick up areas.

That's my point, since when does Uber rely on drivers standing around to get rides. If you use the app, you can confirm the identity of the driver when they collect. People are relying on unidentified people standing around luring them into their vehicles - add some sweets and you'd have a honest to goodness horror movie!

Exactly - there is no defence if they get caught offering an "uber". Plus to bait this ANC government - most of these tools are foreigners, you can score some points with removing the scum.
