How to Update Samsung Galaxy S1 GT 19000?

Hi there Im helping a friend update the software on the galaxy s1. The reason we are doing the update, is because of recent software crashes. Im not to clued up on android, so any help would be great. First thing we tried was through samsung kies, but the phone has connection problems...
