For some time now I've wanted to scrap Dstv in place of a better internet account, but with all the new packages and options available, I'm not sure which way to turn.

Firstly, I don't know how much data I would need. I basically watch an Mnet series or two per night and maybe a documentary if something catches my attention. Then I watch a fair amount of sport, ranging from EPL, all local rugby and cricket and formula one. I don't even know if there's any way of watching this online? Movie wise, I tend to prefer new releases over Dstv's repeat channels so I hire them in any case. I'm currently a premium pvr subscriber so I'm paying in the region of R700/month iirc.

So how much data am I looking at here? Is it best to go uncapped or buy bundles? Would a 1mb speed be fine or would I need to go with a 4mb line? How heavily will I be shaped if I'm going uncapped?

Basically I'd like to look at the cost comparison and work out if it's worth doing so. I'd love to go with the PseudoTV option on an HTPC as per Keeper's awesome guide.

Any thoughts (on topic) would be appreciated...

1mb won't be enough rather get 4mb uncapped from mweb for R899, the shaping isn't so bad that you would have a problem watching online.

Does that R899 include line rental of a 4mb line? Apologies I'm on my phone and the mweb website refuses to open...

That seems like a pretty awesome deal then. I'm assuming it's a month to month thing which would be great.

The last thing I want to do is can Dstv and then be disappointed with the results of an HTPC considering I have little to no content as of yet to put on the thing...:D

Assuming you don't have an existing ADSL line and 4MB is important to you I would suggest doing some more research. The line speed Telkom will install is very dependant on how far you are from the exchange, availability, copper line quality etc.

Without installing, how could I know what line speed I could get? Could they give this to me over the phone?

I know that up until a few months ago my area was limited to up to 512 speeds, but the exchange magically caught fire one day and they replaced it with (I'm assuming) better equipment. Not to boast but I live in a very upmarket area and there is no shortage of cash to spend around here, so it always boggled my mind that Telkom didn't upgrade us by their own accord...

Not sure the number(try 10210) and ask for new services. They should be able to tell you what speed you can subscribe to - either 384,1MB or 4MB.However Telkom will not guarantee 4MB speeds(They advertise it as UP to 4MB).If it is a new exchange and you are within 3 km's of it you shouldn't have any problems getting 4MB but of course subject to availability.
