"Cape Town - Every month a shocking 5000 Capetonians fail their driving licence test, along with 5700 who fail their learners test, according to the City of Cape Town’s traffic department.

In effect, that means each month only a third of would-be drivers are passing their tests, getting the green light to take to the roads.

Slightly more than 60 percent pass their learners test, on average, each month."

My son passed first time last week and to be honest he's still a bit shaky and a little nervous. I think the K53 is pretty flawed in it's methodical approach and it's just a question of being robotic to get through your test regardless of how you actually drive, if you know what I mean :/
 
It's Cape Town... What did they expect. Probably the worst drivers in the country and then they try to teach their fellow 'tonians how to drive...

Judging by the standard of driving I see in the real world, I'd say that they're letting quite a few pass when they should be failed.

I agree with Spizz - the K53 doesn't make you a driver. It makes you capable of driving very slowly around a route you've been coached on and when you move outside your comfort zone, you're screwed. I taught my kids to drive - how to physically drive the car, how to anticipate what the idiot in front is about to do, how to handle freeway traffic, how to overtake. Then I sent them to an instructor to enable them to get their license. Having a license does not mean you can drive.

Agree 100%.

I went the same route, been driving since I was 14. Had my own car at age 15. When I went for the license test folks enrolled me for 2 hours lessons just for K53... Went for the test in my own car and passed 1st time. The problem is, people go do this K53 shyte and think they can drive. You actually need to know how to drive then do the K53 as pointers on how to pass the test. Not do the K53 and think you will pass if you can't drive.

It's like writing your Matric exam but only actually study 2 days before your final starts...
 
Looking at the way some of our taxi drivers drive I would have though you only need to one thing to pass the test.

Where do you switch on your emergency lights. When they're flashing it allows you to do anything.

Cant comment on cape town but up north, a pass is determined by luck and or a couple of R100 / R200 rand notes. Some of the driving schools are on on the take.
For sure the k53 is pure crap. Who really does a preflight check before every start. You know your vehicle and know where/ what / when to look.
 
When I was still in school K53 was considered easy. These days kids have become so stupid they find it hard. Devolution....

Well whatever way it falls, it's obviously not a good test because the shocking death rate in SA points to bad driving.
 
And a portion of those buy their licenses. Therefore the shocking accident rate of new drivers.

Driving is SA is hazardous and the test should be hard.

The test should be hard, but the problem is that the K53 is filled with unnecessary bullschit that does nothing to aid road safety. Half of it is checking your blind spots and mirrors every 5 seconds, that you're not actually paying attention to the road in front...
 
I agree, they should fail much more people if I look at current drivers. The department is a big fail too.
I also know of good drivers who fails too, that I contribute to them trying to make money from honest people. :twisted:
 
As a driver who has been driving without accidents since 2009, I would not be able to pass the K53 now. It's just too difficult. Saying otherwise is being silly.

Learning the K53 method does not teach you to drive. That rubbish only ensures that you only start learning to drive after you've passed your drivers. That's why so many people can't drive. Get rid of the rubbish and teach people to drive properly from the get-go.

Case in point, how many people here drove the K53 method past their drivers test?
 
I failed when I redid my test. Examiner accused me of rolling forward as I pulled out of the parallel parking bay (forward)....

Blatant bribe-seeking.

Exactly. You have to swivel your head around like a madman for absolutely everything you do. Nobody drives like that because it isn't efficient and it certainly won't be safe to drive like that on the highway.

THIS. Too many people pay for their drivers license these days without realising that they can cause accidents and kill people if they cannot drive propery properly on the roads or learn to park properly.
