hi guys

just got a 500gb hdd SATA 32mb cache, how do i set the jumper, ie 1.5Gb/s or 3Gb/s??? any ideas???

Thaks

If the board is SATA = 1.5
If the board is SATA2 = 3

There should be a little white jumper on the drive. Remove it ;)
/edit: to set it for 3Gb/s

P.S. The label on the drive should also have instructions on all the connectors and jumper settings.

Not so I'm afraid: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serial_ATA#SATA_II_misnomer
SATA II misnomer

Popular usage may refer to the 3.0 Gbit/s specification as "Serial ATA II" ("SATA II" or "SATA2"), contrary to the wishes of the Serial ATA International Organization (SATA-IO) which defines the standard. SATA II was originally the name of a committee defining updated SATA standards, of which the 3 Gbit/s standard was just one. However since it was among the most prominent features defined by the former SATA II committee, the name SATA II became synonymous with the 3 Gbit/s standard, so the group has since changed names to the Serial ATA International Organization, or SATA-IO, to avoid further confusion.

Go to your motherboard manufacturer's site and check what your motherboard specifications are. Or check your manual, that's usually the easiest..

mb came with no books ie just motherboard, i think its OEM.
what should i look out for if i google it the board name and serial??

Get this program:

http://www.gtopala.com/download/siw.exe

Open it and click Motherboard. Look for manufacturer and model number. That's all you need to search for. Don't even search for it on google, go straight to the manufacturer, ie. if it's Gigabyte, go to Gigabyte, MSI> MSI> Intel> Intel etc.

Do you have a model number for that board?

I found this info on the KDQ35JOE model which seems to be SATA2.

Intel® 'Johannesburg' P35 Intel Pentium 4/D/Core2 FSB1333 Integrated MB 1x PCI Express x16, 4x DDR2-800(Dual), 1x PCI, 2x PCI E x1 Slots Intel High Definition Audio, Intel Pro Gigabit LAN 10/100/1000, 6x SATA2, 1x PATA, mTX,

this is what the manual says so i think i can pull the jumper to enable 3 Gbits/s on my hdds. right???

The DG33FB Desktop Board’s Serial ATA controller offers four independent Serial ATA ports with a theoretical maximum transfer rate of 3 Gbits/sec per port

Most motherboards made in the last 2 years or so have been SATA 3Gbps boards, it may even go back further time wise. Only the most absolute basic would still be first generation, and even then I haven't personally seen a budget board with 1st generation.

I never knew about those jumpers on Seagate hard drives until one day I saw them by chance. I took it out, but there wasn't much of a speed boost. Hard drives can't even really fill generation 1 capacity throughput.
