1 billion iPhones sold

Is it really fair counting all iterations as one device?

Yes but you don't see other manufacturers doing that. They don't go and say well we've sold 98 million Astra's since 1977. Would be nice if they broke it down to how many versions of each they sold.
 
I take it back, seems Samsung does the same thing with the Galaxy line.

Remember he is talking to the public.
The public dont care whether it is the iPhone 4,5, 5s, 6 SE etc
Remember the geeks on techcrunch and mybb dont matter at all.

He has disclosed the distribition
500M in the last 2 years. 500M since 2007

Bear in mind the big guy Samsung doesnt even disclose sales or units sold, let alone by product line.

Are there any smartphone companies that are more granular?
