Is it possible for me to be running one adsl line and heve two different isp's running on it? With two routers?
 
not with 2 routers. Only 1 DSL modem can sync on 1 line at a time. You can, however, establish 2 pppoe sessions (each for a different ISP) on 1 modem through 1 line.
 
if you're confused just search the forum for "bridged mode" and you'll find 100 different guides to switching your modem to bridged mode and establishing independant PPPoE connections from different devices... (good wireless routers have a PPPoE dialers built in).
 
Ok now that i got that outta the way, do any of u know how to take off the firewalls on the Telkom ADSL 5100 Router?

take them off as in "remove them entirely", or do you want to allow certain ports to forward - the former is not recommended...
 
The former is recommended if you want to run your own propper firewall... an important note:

if you switch your router to bridge mode, the built in firewall will have no effect on your traffic, it will all come to your PC directly... very usefull if you want to host any kind of server (no port forwarding). BUT it's also important to ensure you have a decent firewall in place on your machine.

I've had no issues and all I'm unsing is the WinXPSP2 firewall with MS Defender2 and Antivir Antivirus.
 
Ok, so know my router is on bridge and the router firewalls will not do anything? Any place i can download some nice firewalls :)
 
IP Cop is one of the better ones, or so I've heard... I use the windows standard one on my machines or a linux based one for clients networks... (momowall)
 
I also have a question regarding this topic:

If I were to get 1 account from Openweb, IS 2 gig International and 30Gig local.
Set up the Openweb account for local only and then get a second account from Web-Africa 3Gig SAIX and set it up for International only.

Would my Openweb account run at full speed (ie. 384 speeds) when I am downloading from the IS News Server for example. What I mean to say is will the connection speeds both be half the actual Line speed, or will any given connection connect at maximum line speed at a given moment while both do not exceed the maximum line speed. :D

Because it would suck to have to disconnect one of the Connections every now and again(just to get 384 line speeds), or does anyone know how to work around this (i.e only connect the second account once it is required?)

I am seriously considering running a linux box with 2 Concurrent connections, I think I have had enough of sub-standard proxies to last a lifetime...

all the PPPoE connections on the router burst up to the maximum line speed... 2 years ago I actually found that thier total speed was faster than the actually line speed.

So if you establish 2 PPPoE connections on a 384k line, they're both capable of doing 384k.

You'll find that the router actually manages it quite nicely, even when you're downloading on the IS connection, your SAIX browsing will be nice and fast... I think it has something to do with the way the router lines up the packets from each connection.

Should I use a Linux based Computer (with a bridge mode router), or use a purpose built Router such as Billion Bipac 7402R2 (This router looks very good).

Sorry I have no experience when it comes to setting up the connections this way, and any type of advice from any person who has went through it all would be great. I can easily set up the router (But just about anyone can :p), but I have absolutely 0 experience with Linux + networks, I know how to setup linux get it running, install drivers stuff like that I just never had my Linux PC connected to a Network when I was playing around with it...

I just use different accounts on different PC's; unfortunately windows can have 2 PPPoE connections, connected at once, but will use only one of them.

If you want to have access to both connections I would recommend setting up a linux box with IPTables etc. so you can route different traffic over different connections. I remember in the good old days of unltd local traffic, I used the entire local IP listing, and automatically routed all the local traffic though one connection and the international though the other.

I warn you though, it's not an easy setup, and requires a fair amount of knowledge on Linux and routing etc. I'm not familiar with that router, or any router that handles routing in that manner (other than a Cisco or other really expensive router that is)

As I said initally, the easiest way to do it is decide which machine you want to download with and which machine you want to do whatever else on, and setup the accounts on the respective machines... if you only have one machine, conside building a cheapy (or digging up that old PIII). Maybe even install virtual machine for your downloads.

EDIT2: Hmm, although this tool is usefull, I have a network and running such a tool isn't going to work very well (Windows + Tool + Connection Sharing = Problems). Can anyone possible provide with the Local IP ranges?

Cant you just use a normal modem... instead of wasting a router in bridged mode
??
 
Jup, u can use a usb or single port modem... just remember that u need a switch too if u wanna network. Its just that ethernet modems are easier to handle

Blackdragon has a modem and he has a router...

So if he buys another router, lets say for his moms office...

Could they both establish different pppoe connections if both routers are connected to the modem???
