I phoned Telkom this morning to find out a bit more about the 1 MB connection.

I have been told they are still in a discussing and marketing research stage and could not reveal anything about pricing and availablility.

But at least this time they knew something about it....
 
one tiny correction, its 1Mb (small b) :)

1MB (big B) means a 8 mbit connection :p
 
They dont. Phone them and ask them about the 2Mbps service, they'll tell you the same thing ...

Deukom found a way of transmitting German TV to Southern Africa, there must be a way of getting European broadband over here...without Telscum getting their dirty fingers on...:D
 
It means the last mile is made available for any competing telecom company to use i.e. Telkom would have to allow competing companies to host equipment in their exchanges. This has proven to be very effective in the UK.

Also called "co location".

It means that Telkom would allow other companies to access and provide services on the copper wire running from your home to their exchange.

For example Internet Solutions might be able to put in their own DSLAM into an exchange for their customers.
 
It can also mean that smaller telcos are created on the local telecom network. This was done quite successfully in the US with the launch of "baby bells".
