Hi,

I've recently used OpenWeb's Silver Uncapped 1 Mbps (R239) trial account and was very impressed with its performance. But I would like to compare this account with other uncapped 1mbps accounts in a similar price category, such as MWeb's offer for R199.

I'd like to know what Pings you were getting for games, average torrent download speed, and how heavily shaped these accounts are at what times?

I've been really happy with OpenWeb, barely ever got shaped. Seamless youtube streaming at 360p, Ping as low as 25ms, torrent speeds around ~95kbps throughout the day.

I'd like to see how other ISP's stack up.

Openweb have the reputation they do because they are good. I'm on Gold and couldn't be happier.

Clearly!

I've just seen on the website right now that they're offering a "1Mbps ‘Gamers Delight, Downloaders Right’ special" for only R169. Is this account any good?

I havent really checked ping times with mweb but my torrent speeds are abot 70+KBPS during the day and 100+ at night/weekends

70kbps sounds a bit low. Was youtube streaming any good during the day?

Antone with Openweb experience? Silver Uncapped? Vanilla Uncapped? etc? Whats the rival to MWEB's R199 package?

This is the usual result I get on my 1MB Uncapped. DL speeds dip a little during business hours, but not by too much, and after 7pm and weekends I always get full speed. I can't comment on torrents, because I don't use them, but http dl's are no problem at all. I'm quite happy with MWEB.

I see ping is not amazing. I'm from Durban and IS account gives +/- 25ms on speedtest.net - 1Mbps line. I think it would all depend on where in SA you are as to what is best.

I would recommend plugg.co.za...they are pretty much IS.

I did a speed test last night with OpenWeb's Standard (R197) trial account. Here's the results:

The ping seems to be misleading, as I was playing TF2 this morning and got 31ms on a local server and 202ms on an european server.
Downloaded a 300mb torrent this monday morning. I averaged 93kb/s and peaked at 113kb/s

I am very pleased with this account, and will be moving to them. :)

I am trying out G-Connect's 1 Mbps Uncapped account and am very satisfied with it. It is currently on promotion for R99pm, which I find very reasonable, especially since it does not seem in any way limited (the account is even unshaped as long as you stay under the 80th percentile). Pings are normally in the 20s and 30s.

Best of all, it pairs very well with UnoTelly, a service that allows one to stream Netflix, Hulu and other channels (these are streaming video providers, mainly from the US, with excellent selections). UnoTelly is very affordable (there's also a free trial) and does not restrict speed like VPNs might (you have the full bandwidth of your connection). This is excellent news for South Africans, where the only reasonable alternative is expensive MultiChoice.

R99 is great value for an uncapped, unshaped product, however they could not estimate a quota for the 80th percentile. I would not want to move to them if, say I start being shaped after 50GB of usage. So I need to know this before hand.
