I saw media reports that 1-million SIM-cards will be handed out for free to the poor over the next few weeks.

A cynical friend responded that a SIM-card without cellphone is worthless. So hlod onto your cellphone - it is obvious where many of those 1-million cellphones will come from.

That's not all ... this week about 70 000 pre-approved loans will be handed out to the public ...

Wadda ya mean?

Okay ... was too early on a monday morning for clarity .. apologies.

I was referring to them blerry companies that send you pre approved loans in the post that always fail to mention the interest rates involved with the loan.

This is kind of the same thing ... you get the sim card but no cell phone. The initiative handing out the cards gets a lot of marketing and hype and goodwill but the actual value of the "gift" is zero. Just like the pre-approved loan thing.

It's carp, and a million suckers will end up in contracts that they don't understand.

And then to top it all off, we'll have to pay for any losses incurred.

Bleugh.

It is part of the RDP (redistribute damn phone) programme. The first thing a criminal does after stealing a cell-phone is to rip the SIM out and fit a new one. Now he can be chatting in 10 seconds after stealing the phone.

I think it's 5 million in total that are to be distributed.

Out of interest, it was worked out that with the amount of 'monopoly money' that was wasted on 'expanding access' by installing 2.5 million odd lines [that are now disconnected], it would have just been cheaper for the gov to buy a few million cellphones and give them out for free. Makes you think huh.
