Hey all

Massive story as short as possible, the stress has been unreal with any attempts ive had to try find out whats wrong with my ADSL line.

Started with Afrihost, all was fine till about mid 2016, when their networks lagged me big time in raids (world of warcraft).

I hopped over to crystalweb (190 latency) and didnt look back till roughly march 2017 where thunder burnt most of my equipment, and since then lots of issues. choppy connection, latency spikes to 500 and 2% packet loss. After countless phonecalls to my ISP and telkom, (the ISP really tried to help me but no solution), winmtr tests and everything, the crap continued. ofcourse, tons of reference codes aswell.

Stopped the game in june, started again in september. It seemed a BIT better from what i recall

Turns out the phone line itself was the issue, got that fixed in October/November, and things seemed even better, tho still a BIT bad in raids (peak time and/or data overflow from the 20 man raid itself?). Forward to ever since crystalweb launched their new portal system and such, its been getting annoying in raids again. Tried axxess, not as good as crystalweb (in the non-peak times), tried afrihost, was working very well till about 22:00/22:30 where it started getting unstable, to the point of 1k ms @ roughly 23:00, so i went back to crystalweb.

Usually in raids it jumps to about 250 maybe 280 delay with mini spikes, and tonight the spikes were worse..

I do an upload/download usage check every time this happens just from mere habbit to doublecheck theres nothing downloading in the background, i disable my wifi on my pad and phone even tho theyre locked and dont download anything anyway.. just as a habbit.

Im not using winmtr anymore to try to figure out wtf is happening im not sure if its due to crystalweb growing now and doing free data deals / if their infrastructure cannot handle the volumes, if the fact that they handle my line even when I use my afrihost adsl account has anything to do with it.. Sometimes i feel that when they were expensive everything was much better, fewer people on the system and such. Am i even correct in saying this?

im just tired.. i really dont know what to do anymore. I use ADSL because my area does not have fibre yet. Things are fine till about 20:00 and gradually get worse till 00:00.

What would you do in my case? Is there an ISP that can do better? Is crystalweb really ideal but somehow its other servers the line connects to (all the way to Blizzard servers in EU) that messes this all up, and is it controllable by a SA ISP as to how these connections are made? The guys at crystal web really did try to help me / do tests and such but i cant handle it anymore, i havent contacted them for months now and I am at the point where I am sick of speaking to support..

If your copper line is solid then try the following.

Sign up for a VPN service to a country where your playing realm is hosted.

My one buddy would occasionally rejoin society for a few hours and then return to WoW. He reckoned he could play quite nicely on a VPN connection. Latency improved a bit but he didnt have any rubber banding.

Hope this helps.

I left Crystal Web (after being a happy VDSL then fibre customer for quite a while) due to their network turning to crap for me.

Currently with Cool Ideas, and their network seems great. They only offer fibre connections though. I'm always hearing good things about Telkom these days, surprisingly, so maybe check them out.

Unfortunately, it seems like DSL ISPs aren't in a good place atm for some reason. Web Africa, Crystal Web, Axxess, Vox etc. - all seem to have a strangely high number of unhappy customers. Not sure how Afrihost is these days, but they were woeful when I last used them (a long time ago though).

Hey, thanks for the replies. I checked out afew VPNs, gave a good one a try, it didnt help, only increased my latency by about 10%. Afrihost amongst others also loses the ball on peak times, just gets much worse. Checking out Openserve now, found some info that they might be good. Signed for a package, no email nothing, called in 24/7 support twice, no support available.

Just remembered RSAWeb. Check them out too. Nearly went with them but chose Crystal Web instead. Their telephonic support was great and the tests I did on their test account were insane. Probably the best performance I've ever received on DSL. If the cost is somewhat in line with what others would charge you, definitely give them a shot ahead of the rest. Hopefully they've maintained the quality of their network.

It is not an ISP issue. Your issue is on the Telkom exchange. Either there is still damage on the card in the exchange that hosts your port OR the exchange has just become "overloaded" with more users over the last year or so.
