Hey all,

I know this has been discussed to death already but I did a lot of searching and could not find a scenario similar to mine.

I currently have an 4mb Openweb Gold Account (R489 special thingy) and it's working great for me and everything but I would like to have a 10mb account. I never download working hours (most downloads happen between 7pm and 7am as my laptop goes to work with me, and I download about 200gb per month). Most of my downloads are from usenet/news servers and use Netflix quite alot. I also play a lot of online games and need to have a pretty stable ping. The line also needs to be stable for the occasional times that I work from home.

Now I want to know is it worth it to go to a lower priority ISP that's a bit more shaped but cheaper? I don't want to struggle with slow speeds the times I am using the internet. I'm willing to pay R900-R1000 (line included) a month but any saving is welcome.

So my question pretty much is it worth it to go to some lower 10mb ADSL priority package or should I stick with 4mb Openweb Gold?

Your usage is not too high by the sounds of it. Why not go for Web Africa's capped 200GB + 200GB capped account. R999 including 10 Mbps line. This will outperform your gold uncapped even on a 4 Mbps line.

+1. The need for uncapped these days is actually diminishing with the large capped packages decreasing in price.

Thanks for all the response. Quick question, how does Afrihost 200GB (R400) perform? Also do they have any after hours cap? Or do you always use anytime cap?

At the moment, crap. If you've been following all the AH hate threads lately you would know. They're upgrading capacity tomorrow so we'll see but I still think IS provides the most solid internet even when AH does have enough capacity.

I have to disagree. I get 1mb/s download speeds on my AH 10mb line, night out day. Like you said they do have capacity problems at the moment in certain areas but personally I don't have any complaints. Even supersport streamed without buffering on Saturday.

Ye, I don't know what the service quality is like up north but here in Cape Town it's been pretty spotty for a while now. I have constant packet loss on the line during the day and the capped account is shaped quite badly during the day even though it shouldn't be. I don't have to repeat this though as I'm not alone.

I would probably not recommend AH but you really can't beat their pricing if you bundle your line, so if you don't mind living with occasionally flaky internet while saving a few bucks then I no reason to avoid them.
