1000 KZN Schools face Closure

KwaZulu-Natal intends closing more than 1000 schools in the province, the National Freedom Party claimed on Friday.

Party spokesman Nhlanhla Khubisa condemned the purported closure as unwarranted.

"This paints a gloomy picture of the state of education in our country and in the province," he said.

Provincial education spokesman Muzi Mahlambi said the NFP lacked information on the transformation of schools and was malicious.

He said the NFP had a political agenda.

Mahlambi did not elaborate.

Khubisa said more schools needed to be built in the province, and the education department lagged behind in providing classrooms.

In march while on holiday I saw many of these schools. I saw just as many kids not in school. Education is not a priority with people.

I think we have to bear in mind the generation that created those kids did not enjoy the same level of schooling that we did both from a quality and economic point of view. It's going to take a long time to right that and the education department don't seem to be doing anything to speed that up.

True. We have to start with decent teachers. A good education has nothing to do with the building and everything with the teacher.

This is pretty much why education should have been free from 1994, including free lunches for students, as well as not interfere with the education system we had at the time with regards to how they were learning (basically, no OBE)
This would have given those parents without the same sort of opportunities as us the following idea:

There's this place I can send the children for the day for free, and they get an education and free meal

Whether or not they were concerned about the education or not, they would have sent the children there for the free meal at least (as evidenced by how the cANCer entices those parents every election year: free food)

I don't think we have, not enough in any way. By the way school attendance goes for teachers? No sorry. The decent ones ( just like everything else ) goes where the money is.
An educated 24 year old doesn't want to live in rural kwa Zulu natal.
Maybe the state should consider more 100% government funded schools with hostels in the bigger towns, this also feeds the kids 3 times a day. And young teachers will more likely want to stay there.
