Hi guys,

As my birthday is coming up, I am interested in getting my first SLR camera.

My budget is about R5500, so naturally, I would consider the best for that price. In light of that, I am looking at the 1000D and D3000.
I understand both are very, very good.

Now I have looked at cameralabs and dpreview at the two cameras in the title, but am having extreme difficulty in choosing one!
Reviews for both, say that they are very good for first time buyers..

Problem is, since the reviews took place over a period of time, they are looked at from different perspectives.. :wtf:

I see that the Canon has live-view (which apparently is not used much (according to dpreview)), where as the Nikon is 'easier' for the newb.

The Canon is going for R4995, whereas the Nikon is going for R4895. Both include 18-55mm lenses.

My question therefore, is which one (all things considered) would prove to be a better buy?
Both feel equally as comfortable in my hands.. :)
Lenses available for both?
Is image stabilisation that important? Does the 3000 include it?

I'm so torn between the two !!!

If you are torn, look at the higher end models. Those are the cameras you will possibly be upgrading to in a few years, carrying over your lens collection. You don't want to start from scratch... So, which brand excites you more?

Dunno.
But my budget aint gonna be able to stretch..
I still need to buy protection for the camera.
I think my focus should be on learning how to take the best shots, perhaps the Nikon would be better - with it's ease-of-use.

As to the brands... I'm totally impartial. Seriously, my last camera was a Sony DSC v90 or something.. It's so old, that the zoom makes a grating sound.. :/

I didn't mean you have to buy the higher end models now... Just look at them to help you make the decision.

If it was my first buy now, it would have been the Nikon.

Right. Thanks for the advice.
But lenses like Tamron etc. Won't they work on both, the Canon and Nikon?

Also, the lense that comes with the Nikon (starter pack?) here Cam+Kit - is it a VR lens (vibration reduction)?

Flip a coin. There is VERY little between those two brands now. Bit like choosing between BWM and Merc. IMO

What sort of protection?

Awesome.
I have a very 'untrustworthy' left hand - tends to exacerbate the shakes..
lol.

Are the Sonys' build quality on par with Canon and Nikon?

Lol. Ja.
Was thinking about storage.

But a shoulder bag may be better suited.
Well here you go - r79 from Mr Price Sport. :D

They are both very good. We know they both will take good shots so go to makro or similar and play with both in hand, have a look at the menu's etc. Choose one which feels better in hand.
