Has anyone ever been told that 1024/4096 is not available in their area?

I cannot recall having seen this before, but Telkom has now told me this when I tried to upgrade a particular line.

I thought all areas were capable of at least 1024, with a maximum of 4096 depending on line quality etc.

Yip, my exchange only supports 512 I'm told.

Actually, the 4meg profile starts at 640kbps. If you can't sync at 640, then 512 is the fastest you can go. You must be very far from the exchange or have bad copper - unlucky!

I had the same problem and I live walking distance form sandton cbd so trust me it has nothing to do with distance from exchange cause how far could I possibly be away from the exchange when SA's biggest blue chip companies are all within a 2km radius from where I live.

It took telkom 3 months to "upgrade my exchange" then following the upgrade for the first week I still only had 512k connection which, after I laid a fault complaint, miraculously became the 4mb line I was paying for.

Also a mate of my who recently moved to Illovo is having the same problem they told him that his exchange is also currently not capable of 4mb only 512k.

Im really interested if anyone can share a rational explanation for this other then telkoms incompetence!!!

lol....thats exactly what i was told, the exchange equipment can only support 512 in my area...and im 2,8km away from the exchange...lol

your best bet would probably be driving around your area until you spot something that may resemble an exchange, so good luck with that
