I currently have a 512kb ADSL line installed. I'm thinking of upgrading to the faster 1024 line. Currently I can download at 50 kilobytes per second. If I upgrade then theoritcally I can download at 100 kilobytes per second? Is that really so or what speeds can I excpect?

Also how long do they usually take to upgrade the line?

Thanks

Also do I now need a 1024 account specifically. (Like the user name and password account type)?

Thanks

nope you dont need another account

but may i ask why your upgrading?

we dont have much bandwidth as is so why do you feel the need to make telkom richer just so you can download stuff at 100kb and blow your cap faster?

Easynews is the reason. If you need something you can get it quick. Thanks Juggy, you answered my question.

Just wondering, why would you subscribe to a service like Easynews when you could sign up for an IS account and get GigaNews for free?

I'll tell you why, it's because I've never heard of what you refer to.

Sounds like a good reason innit?

Telkom, do they have a decent news server?

Bwahaha. No.

:D jokes aside,

IS have the best darn news server south of the equator - bar none.

get an IS account (openweb has a small top up one, no contract AFAIK) and give it a try - news.is.co.za

I used to work for IS so I know their news server well. I'm quite happy with my Telkom account as I only get capped at around 10GB for the price of 3. When I get capped i buy a 2GB account and use it sparingly.

Thanks for the advice though.

The openweb 30gig account is probably equal to the cost that you are paying for your 3gig, let alone you buying another 2gig and probably paying a subscription to easynews. I fail to see why you havent got the 30gig, seeing that you are on 1mbit, you could get the 10day local uncapped even!

For starters, on the IS account I wont even get 1024 for international access because of their shocking latency etc. I did try an IS account and it didn't work for me. I also manage servers overseas so latency is an issue.

Although Openweb does look very tempting, I'm taking a trawl through their products right now.

Seeing as how you manage servers, I will assume you are technically capable.
If so, simply get a 2/3GB SAIX account for the international stuff, and an IS account for news stuff, and set up appropriate routing to manage the traffic.
Best option, and my setup does that beautifully - I have never run out of international since going that route, and get a lot of local traffic.

I was wondering, if you upgrade your line from a Business 512k line to a 1meg line, do you pay R404 installation fee, or is it supposed to be a free upgrade. I heard something about that somewhere.. Wondering if it is too good to be true, which with telkom, it probably is.

Upgrades are free - its the downgrade that they charge you for.
