1024 uncapped account on 4 mb line ?

Hey guys

I was wondering if this was a good idea , busy trying to upgrade from a 384 line to a 4 mb and I know that the 4mb line wont get anywhere near its full speed . So wouldn't a 1024 uncapped account be better and you can use it to its full potential ?

It all depends on your area what distance you are from the exchange and so on to determine if your full 4meg can be utlised or not. But if you think of it like this...If you think the full 4meg won't be available to be used what will then be available to be used on the 1meg service...

as you'll be paying for a 1meg service you'll be throttled at the same time as other 1meg uncapped users.

Then if cost is what you're looking at why not get a 512 line? They are mostly 1meg nowadays.

Ok i see what you guys are saying , so just because its a 1 meg account doesn't mean you will get full 1 meg speeds ? Is there anyway to find out if I'm eligible for the 512 to 1024 upgrade ? I remember there was a checker for the 4meg to 10 meg upgrade .
I'm getting around 300 kbps according to speedtest on 384 line. Is this a decent indicator of what kind of speeds I will get in relation to the 4meg line ?

You'll never get 100% line speed due to various technical issues (overhead etc) but it would probably be better to pay for a 1mbps (512k upgraded) line than 4mbps if you're only using a 1mbps account.

Why do you reckon that you won't be able to get the full speed for 4Mbps? Could you perhaps post your SNR margins, line attenuation and current line speed - all of which you can get on the router's status webpage.

If push comes to shove and you're too far from the DSLAM (eg. Line attenuation of 50dB), then I'd suggest that you sign up for the 512kbps (which should be 1Mbps at most locations) and then use the 1Mbps uncapped account.
