Hey all.

Takealot has a special on an Infocus 1080p DLP 3D Projector for R6000. http://www.takealot.com/infocus-in118hdxc-1080p-dlp-3d-projector/PLID39992259

Has anyone got any insight to offer on these "budget" HD projectors? It is not common to see a true full hd projector for that kind of price. I am looking to use it as a lounge home theater type situation. I know the whole visibility in the daytime is often an issue but that does not concern me. The source will be a small media PC over HDMI. What concerns me most is image quality and the dreaded rainbow effect?

Do you think its a waste of time or worth a try?

Do some research on resolutions and viewing distances. It may be more sensible to spend the money on a higher quality but lower resolution unit. Lamp brightness, noise, lamp life, colour quality all play an arguably bigger part in the viewer experience then resolution.

I've used an Infocus projector 1024*768 resolution after an 800*600 Acer unit was stolen. The picture quality is awesome (I also have a 1080p Acer projector in the lounge and use the Infocus for presentations)

The only thing is the build quality seems to be a tiny bit below Acer's. One thing I'd be worried about is the rainbow effect which can be quite noticeable on cheaper units. If reviews don't mention is being problematic, I'd go for it!

Mate of mine has that very unit and bought from Takealot the last time they had it on special and I was very impressed with it.

Granted my exposure to projectors (outside of the office environment) hasn't been that great so it's hard to compare, but for the money I don't think you can go wrong really.

There is a very good Projector related thread on here though, I would advise posting in there.

How long does these bulbs last and how long are they available? Id be pretty P!ssed if I spend that kind of money and I can't get hold of replacement or the replacement costs the same as the unit

Quite available and lasts a good couple of thousand hours...more if you look after them well. Usually about 5000 hours.
