1080p Gfx card

Hey guys,

I was going to build a mini atx machine, but decided to recycle my old AMD64 3500+ (since its way cheaper). The machine has 2 gigs of ram and a 6800 GTs. I need to do 1080p though, so I was wondering if there is a gfx card that can get me there, since the 3500+ probably won't be able to encode/decode. Looking at something with HDMI out so i can connect it to my LCD. Board has a PCI-E Slot.

if its only for hd vids im sure it will be ok . i know the feeling haha havent upgraded in a while . just to make sure , get some reviews about the card and see wat the experts say

You sure? Some people tell me 4550 should be more than plenty, but i am skeptical.

4350 would be fine... I dont see why your 6800 couldn't do it to be honest.

Need something with HDMI out, 6800 has VGA and DVI only. 6800 + single core AMD cannot handle the encoding. Any tricks I should try ?

It depends which protocols you're using - h.264 should be ok.

Hm maybe it isn't possible. At any rate the 4350 should be fine - it's designed really for htpc builds.

I'd get a 5450, the 512mb version, since it supports bitstream over HDMI, in the event that you have or will get a sound system that has Dolby/DTS (4350 only supports 7.1). It is also passively cooled.

If you're running windows, you'll need to setup MPC:HC properly to get your card to do the gruntwork.

i'm running onboard graphics and getting HD playback, but admitedly, its not as smooth as can be, u really dont need a super high end card, something around 500-600 should suffice. I'm getting the 4650 for 463 from sybaritic, I believe that will be good enough

Cool. Gonna try MPC:HC (thanks RudiMetal) as soon as I get a case and build the machine into it and see if I can get the 6800 to do the work. If not i will get the 4350 from anywhere but Sybaritic

Here is a nice guide to help you set up MPC:HC: http://imouto.my/watching-h264-videos-using-dxva/. If you check check down towards the bottom for DXVA support, it doesn't seem like the 6800 has it, but I'd try anyway. Unfortunately I gave away the 6800GS I had to a friend, otherwise I could also test for you.
