My line went from a stable 10mb down over two years to 900kb-1.2mb down line from Friday night onwards.

I've tried two ISP's with no change in the result, so my last option(s) that I can think of is hardware issue or line issue.

I have observed when I reset my router after it being off for one or two minutes is that on synchronisation, the line starts at 10mb, and a few minutes later it drops down to the 1mb mark more or less. Upload speeds also drop to 300kb instead of 1mb.

I live in the pretoria east area.

How to go forward? Any ideas?

What are the actual stats (include sync speed, attenuation, SNR etc) reported by your modem?

the line starts at 10mb, and a few minutes later it drops down to the 1mb mark

Is that throughput or sync speed?

Attenuation, SNR values and is there crackling on the line? Sounds like a line fault to me

Yes sounds like a line fault ,but could also be the cable having reflections etc.(telkom call it metalic noise)
Get them to test your line ,there are two tests one for ADSL and one for the phisical line.

sync speed is currently 1504Kbps, but it has synced yesterday to 938Kbps or so.

i bought a cisco x3000 and only found out afterwards that they don't value having the stats of attenuation etc. on the GUI. leaves me in the dark a bit.

You could try removing all devices (telephones, filters, modem etc) from your line and then connect your modem only to the the first available socket (from your outside lead-in cable). Same process applies for checking for noise on your line, or an issue with the dial tone - just plug a phone handset only in instead.

What's your upload sync speed? Reposition your modem; move it away from any electronic devices that might be causing interference. It may also best to test a different modem altogether.

Also in Pta East and I have similar issues. I think in my case there aren't enough lines or something. Working my way towards 3g/4g as my line is unstable and if there is a cloud in the sky it shuts down. I've tried everything and have gone from 7/8Mbps to 2/3Mbps and very unreliable.

Sounds like a fault. Check for noise on the line as per post above.

Found the system info hidden away from the GUI...dunno why they wouldn't show it on the router's console!

Anyhow, here is the info on a 10mb line that has been stable for around two years and suddenly started acting up on Saturday evening:

DSL UpStream Rate (Kbps):299
DSL DownStream Rate (Kbps):915

Down Up
DSL Noise Margin (0.1 dB): 48 57
DSL Attenuation (0.1 dB): 400 210
DSL Transmit Power (0.1 dB): 165 127

Hi There,
Your stats don't look particularly inspiring. The noise margin should be higher than 4.8dB and your attenuation is not fabulous at 40dB (your router is working at 0.1dB ) This is a good sticky article on attenuation.
I would suggest that you have a line problem and you should follow all the advice on the posts above.

Let us know how you get on

Tim

Confirmed. Out of all of your lines available bandwidth (10/0.1mbps), upstream sync speed is allocated first, then downstream. Upstream's supposed to be anywhere between the 800-1000kbps mark - anything below this indicates the potential for some sort of interference.

It's either a faulty in-line filter somewhere, maybe an issue with your internals, your modem could also be on it's last legs, or you have a line fault.

Try all the troubleshooting in this thread and if that shows no improvement, contact your provider to log a fault.
