As long as it doesn’t plug into a car socket. I’ve found those pull too much power and blow the car fuses constantly so at the very least it needs crocodile clips to connect directly to the battery.
I have a small “silent” compressor with a tank for this.

I just buy the cheapies off Takealot, nothing wrong except they take forever and get warm so dont let it run for more than 10 minutes

Agreed. And if they don't blow the fuses, they are usually so weak it will take forever to inflate a tyre.

I have had this one for just over a month. Works well but wish it had a more accurate pressure gauge (the little lines are pretty close together making it difficult to get an exact reading). I suggest buying a seperate pressure gauge.

These things easily draw in excess of 15A!
The bigger ones are not supposed to draw more than 30A But, as they are mostly unserciable, as they age they draw more and the start blowing fuses.
The parameter to look at is the duty cycle.
The smaller ones work okay on smaller wheels below 15 inch diameter. But most new cars have big wheels and then you are in trouble. Get one suitable for a bakkie and then you have piece of mind.

Very happy with my Moto-Quip 35L 12V cigarette lighter compressor. Usually around R800 which seems like a bargain. Quality is decent. Pumps bicycle tyres in seconds, and 19” car tyres only take a few minutes. Gauge a little hard to read at first but seems perfectly accurate.

Cut off the cig lighter plug and put on battery clips on the smaller ones. BUT then take the power through an in line fuse.

Thanks for all the input. Spent the morning testing and ended up with this Mac Afric 002 from Adenorff at only R425 with two clips for a few bucks.
Works damn well on my car tyres. No heating up and quick enough.
Will test the guage tomorrow against my good quality handheld.

We always called the small electrical pumps "2 beer pumps" as it took normally 2 beers to just re-inflate the wheels when going back on to a tar road after a fishing trip at the beach.

Tested it's guage. Reads 3.0 when actual is 2.5.
Not a train smash now that I know.
Only slightly warm after topping up 4 tyres.

Got one of these too, had it for yonks and still works well. It even survived a motorcycle crash although it does look a bit different now..

Have you bought a slow pumper-?

Hi, I bought 3 a few years back, one was a double compressor with a small tank 12V.
When I tested it, it was filling slower than one of the others single cilynder I bought at local Agri.
On investigation, I found factory fillings in the intake track after removing the aircleaner holder. The factory forget to remove casting leftovers before assembly, this one was the most expensive. I filed those out, and after that it pumped fast, faster than the other one from Agri as expected.
I found the same problem on the other single cilynder I bought.

So if you have a new lazy pumper, inpect it for clear passages to move the air. The lack of quality control understanding seems to be gene based, really this should not have left any factory.
