Good...a step in the right direction.

A top ANC politician and a prominent Limpopo businessman are among the first 120 people and firms restricted from doing business with the government under tough new tender rules.

ANC Western Cape secretary Songezo Mjongile has been blacklisted after a company linked to him failed to honour its contractual obligations with the Western Cape health department.

Limpopo businessman Tom Boya has been restricted because a company linked to him delivered poor workmanship on a contract to build RDP houses in 2006.

Both men said they would appeal the decisions.

Mjongile's name appears on a list compiled by Treasury, which contains the names of 120 individuals and companies barred from doing business with the state. The list was presented to parliament by Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan this week.

The blacklist is part of stringent new regulations to prevent tender fraud and overpricing. Gordhan said Treasury would monitor all tenders above R500000 at all levels of government, including municipalities.

I'm 100% behind this. However no one should temper with the "blacklist" and the ban should last for a lifetime
 
Excuses, excuses, pffft.

Mjongile said yesterday that he was only involved in helping his ex-wife to set up the company, and that he resigned from the company after they divorced.

"I was not running the business," he said.

His ex-wife, Linda, could not be reached for comment.

Meanwhile, Boya's company, Legae Consortium, was blacklisted after it was found to have delivered poor quality RDP houses between 2006 and 2007.

Boya claimed that the company, from which he has since resigned, had completed the RDP houses.

"We only have to write to one department, the department of local government and housing - because it is the one that has restricted me and my other directors - to say that they must fix up this mess of theirs.

"I am being called by newspapers about this restriction and I am not going to take it lying [down]," he said.

They'll probably just re-register new companies and continue on their merry way. Or more likely go with proxies. It'd be better if they'd gone for prosecution, a tenderpreuner in jail is better than one who is just going to find a new way around the blacklist with ample help from officials and politicians.

True, there will always be those who workaround the system like Songezo. Naming and shaming them is a good start though. Perhaps those who are blacklisted, refused business will be the whistle blowers, expose the officials, politicians who helped other blacklisted tenderpreuners. I know from an internal source that same thing happen at PetroSA.

Like this means anything, I've seen guys use their, Brothers, Sisters, Wives, Mothers, Fathers, Second Cousins Neighbours Wifes Dog to leach of tenders...
 
Blacklist him AFTER he breaks down the houses and builds proper ones at his own expense.

So anything under that (which would be the vast majority of tenders) will still be fair game? Woot Woot, all aboard the gravy train.
 
So these two guys are complaining.

The one because his wife (ex-wife?) dumped everything and left him in this mess. He should sue her rather.

And the other because of shoddy workmanship (according to the State).

Really, what did they expect? A song and a dance for a lot of money? Grow up, stop whining, and start delivering 100% service. Not 20%. Or even 40%.

Just because something doesn't have to go out to tender doesn't mean it can't. And you can probably bet that if something's going out to tender when it needn't, the tender's going to be awarded fairly... otherwise they'd just skip the needless tender part and give the job to the dodgy guy. Amright?
 
Under R500 000 means that plenty of moolah can be channeled to their buddies.
 
Why haven't they blacklisted the Mpisane's yet?

You're right, it doesn't mean much.
This is more likely window dressing and not likely to stop the rot.
