So I tried gnome shell back in the day and ran into some ATI issues. Been using Unity ever since. Now when 13.04 was released I decided to give it a whirl again. Lasted for a week and I just couldn't take it any more, and have gone back.
I realise a week isn't long enough to clearly assess it, so I would like to hear from those who have tried both or other shell interfaces, what you liked and disliked about them, and why you stick with which ever you do.
This is what I found. and before I start, I realise that most of my gripes are avoidable by changing my work flow, so a lot of these things are subjective, and a matter of taste, But that is what I'm looking for- what keeps YOU coming back time after time.
Gnome shell:
Like:
-Gnome shell extensions are awesome.
-I love that the dash is not so cluttered.
Dont Like:
-I didn't like that minimize is hidden by default and you have to right click to bring up that option or get into some of the lower level files to change that.
-The dash auto hides, so you cant use it to quickly switch apps. I installed the dock on the right hand side through extensions, but that revealed everytime I tried to scroll a web page- super annoying. Installed a bottom dock, so I eventually had 3 docks and none of them worked for me.
-I hated the way the dash automatically shrinks and creates previews of your windows everytime you open it. That's actually why I installed the right dock and eventually left Gnome remix.
-I also found it a LOT slower and less responsive. Often an action would freeze for 5 seconds+ and my system froze once or twice forcing a reboot.
Unity:
Dont like:
-I don't like how cluttered the dash is- and being in SA we only get rubbish music showing up in the "more choices" list. All I want are the apps I've installed.
Not the biggest fan of the purple motif
Like:
The dash is always visible and has visual indicators, such as progress bars for copying files, new messages etc
Love the ability to install web services like Gmail etc.
Quick and responsive environment.
Login/log out works better for me- just because my monitor picks up the wrong resolution and displays an error in the middle of the screen. All options are thus hidden in gnome.
The menu bar docks into unity's top status bar just giving a bit more space.
Software center is great.
the Hud is freaking awesome.
I also prefer the default icon sets.
