This sounds horrific!

Johannesburg - Fifteen people were killed when a bakkie and bus collided on the R510 on Sunday, the North West public safety department said.

Department spokesperson Simon Mmope said paramedics confirmed that 10 men, two women and three children, aged between 8 and 12 were killed in the crash, which occurred between Northem and Rustenburg.

"According to traffic authorities the bakkie was overtaking when it collided head on with a bus. All people in the bakkie died on the scene," said Mmope.

A number of the bus passengers were injured. They were transported to a local hospital.

The road linking the North West to Limpopo was closed for several hours after the crash but it had since been re-opened.

As a person who drives on the open road a lot, I can tell you that dangerous overtaking is a real problem in SA. It's a sheer lack of common sense. I don't understand how people can overtake on corners, blind rises/drops and when oncoming is close enough to read their plates.

Natural selection in action but is the idiots who take out the innocent.

Yep, you should try travelling to Mozambique just after the mines have closed. I've never seen such reckless overtaking in my life.

Unfortunately in most third world countries the traffic laws are ignored and people pay the price for it.
 
North West Premier Thandi Modise said she was shocked and saddened by an accident that claimed the lives of 15 people near Rustenburg on Sunday.

Another 28 people were injured when a bakkie and bus collided on the R510 between Northem and Rustenburg.

Modise said this was the worst accident the province had experienced in recent years.

It was alleged the driver of an overloaded bakkie tried to overtake three vehicles.

His vehicle, which was carrying 14 passengers, collided head on with an oncoming bus.

The North West public safety department said the 10 men, two women and three children, aged between eight and 12 who were in the bakkie were instantly killed.

The bus driver and his passengers sustained minor injuries.

They were taken to the Moses Kotane Provincial Hospital near Sun City.

"We wish to convey our condolences to the families that lost their loved ones in the crash and wish those injured a speedy recovery,” said Modise. She said road safety remained the responsibility of every motorist.

"One death on our roads is a death too many. Despite leaving many widowed

and orphaned, road accidents put a strain on our health care system, [it] leaves behind untold miseries and many crippled,” said Modise.

She said the provincial government would assist towards the burial of those killed in the crash.

Unfortunately this is a huge problem,seriously dangerous road violations like this go unchecked because the cops are too busy out to get you for driving 10 kilometers over the speeds limit.I've seen a bakkie overloaded with people drive past a "cop" with a trap but he did not even bother stopping them,he instead continued to trap people doing 10 km/h over the limit.

I drive between Jhb and Vereeniging often and at least three times a month I have found cars driving on that road at night WITH ABSOLUTELY NO LIGHTS ON!:wtf:

It ridiculous.Our "traffic departments" should be renamed "speed control departments" because that all they seem to care about,road safety doesn't bother them much.I guess its because they can make more money of speeding cars.

MINISTER MARTINS ON FATAL CRASH ON R510 IN NORTH WEST PROVINCE

Pretoria: Transport Minister, Honourable Dikobe Ben Martins has expressed shock and sadness following the death of 15 people in the North West province yesterday.

Fifteen people were tragically killed yesterday (Sunday, 30 June 2013) around 12noon on the R510 road at the Sandfontein village offramp in the North West province when a light delivery type vehicle and a bus collided. Twenty-nine (29) other people are reported to have sustained injuries during the crash.

Preliminary reports indicate that the light delivery type vehicle turned into oncoming traffic and collided with the bus. Reports also indicate that all 15 fatalities were from the light delivery type vehicle.

A case has been opened with the South African Police Service in Mogwase, North West province.

The Minister has urged the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) to speed up the investigation to determine the cause of the crash. The RTMC had by yesterday already dispatched a team of crash and incident reconstruction and investigation experts.

Minister Martins sends his heartfelt and sincere condolences to the families of the deceased and wishes those injured a speedy recovery. He has called on every road user to take personal responsibility in road safety and ensure that South Africa's roads are not turned into killing fields.

"We wish to repeat our message and call on all South Africans to come together and join hands to stop this carnage on our roads. One death on our roads is one too many. Together, we can save millions of lives on our roads" said Minister Martins.

Brutal accident. Have driven past an accident like this near London. Many body parts :sick:
