15" Macbook Pro Retina - RAM question

Hi guys, is anyone able to tell me how many modules the 8GB (ME293) model comes with? Is it 1x8GB or 2x4GB?

I am looking at upgrading when I purchase it, but need to know if I should buy the 8GBx2 or just the 1.

If you are referring to the latest model then unfortunately the RAM is soldered onto the board. So basically it's not upgradeable.
 
It's not impossible, google would help, youtube too. But I wouldn't recommend it. I have a 13" retina and 8gb is perfect IMO

Normally I wouldn't complain, but I need the 16GB as the SharePoint 2013 VM that I use to do dev work on requires 8 minimum. I usually give it everything that's free.
 
I was considering a 15" retina but 8 GB and 256 SSD just wont cut it for me, my 2010 13" pro already has 8 GB and 256 SSD so not much of an upgrade, the next round of 15" retina macbooks might start at 16GB ram so I'll hold out. If apple made the retina's user upgradeable I would have got one but they lost a sale.
 
I've been trying to get some information with regards to the newer models, but I've been coming up short. The last refresh was in October, and then during the WWDC the year before. So it will either happen on the 2nd, or a bit later in the year.

Why not try the Surface Pro 3?

I ask because I can't decide between the Surface Pro 3, or an Apple device. I never owned one yet but many people say that installing Windows 8.1 on a Macbook Air is better than having OSX on it.

Opinions?


It will be used for dev only.

Let me guess...those same people have never used anything other than Windows?

Installing Windows on Mac for use as the primary OS is a waste of your money. Go buy a Windows machine instead then.


Using it occasionally for very specific Windows needs is something else.

What type of dev work? There is nothing you can't do in Virtualbox/VMWare Fusion/Parallels and all of those you can make to work with your native bootcamp partition so when you need the raw non-virtualised power you can reboot and use that instead.

A Surface Pro 3? What? Apples and oranges, dude...
 
A surface pro 3 is a full blown windows machine... Its a bridge between laptop and tablet. Anandtech has a review. The MacBook Air only has a bigger screen size, or am I missing something?

Don't confuse a MacBook Air with a MacBook Pro.
 
Hopefully they'll announce some new tech on the 2nd to make my decision easier. If nothing comes of it, I will have to then extend to the 16GB version to accommodate my VM's.
 
You don't want to pay the price of the MacBook or the Dell you posted?
