So my magic upgrade date is 19 June 2013 and I've finally given up all hope of carrying around the One for the next 24 months.

Anyway, my eyes have turned towards the S4 mini instead. Can anybody help my with any of the following:
  • Is there an ETA for this phone from Vodacom as yet?
  • Will the SA version of the S4 mini be LTE?
  • Will the S4 mini have the same accidental damage warranty as the S4?

But why settle for the Mini when you can get the LTE version of the S4, due any week now...

In my opinion you would be better off getting a Galaxy S3 rather than the S4 mini. The S4 mini may be newer but spec wise the Galaxy S3 is a lot better.

The full-blown S4 is a bit too big for my liking, not to mention being too big for my budget.

I'm with you on this one. I want a normal sized phone, but with decent performance. Not a stupidly oversized 5" screen. Only News I have is that the S4 mini will be available later this month at most Service Providers. While I'm with MTN, they told me:

Phone + 100min + 25smses + 100MB data x24months = R249.00 pm. Which is stupid.

Other phone to look out for is the Sony Experia SP, which is almost the same, except for waterproofing.

Better, in what way? Also, there's a good chance the S4 mini will come with the accidental damage warranty - the S3 doesn't.

EDIT: here's the spec comparison - http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=5375&idPhone2=4238

The S3 has a better ( higher res ) screen, a faster CPU, and a bigger battery.

The S4 Mini has more RAM ( The S3 is hamstrung by it's memory limit ), IR remote function, and accidental damage cover.

They both have the same storage options, the same camera quality.

Pretty comparable phones. I'd probably choose the S3 for the screen and CPU, but I suffered badly with running into that memory wall all the time

Add Android 4.2, a smaller form factor, LTE and a lower price into the mix and the S4 becomes a clear winner for me.

The S3 is (slightly) bigger than the S4. If thats already too big for him than how would a bigger phone be better?

Also, OP, why did you give up on the One? Is it the ridiculously stupid camera?

The final straw that convinced me was the accidental damage warranty on the Samsung - that is one serious perk. Then there's the lack of HTC support in SA, free WiFi & faster firmware upgrade from Samsung. Also, I'm not sure I want to spend quite as much on a phone as the prices the flagship devices are going for.

All that being said, if HTC announce an accidental damage warranty today, I'll place an order for the One tomorrow.

Glad its your opinion but I'm also giving S3 a skip because of this ...

....

Just last week my friend dropped his S3 (3 weeks old) and now he has a dead screen.

You will have to go on the waiting list. The five units destined for SA for 2013 has already been allocated.

If the S4 is too big for your liking, get the mini. Chances are you won't even notice the difference especially if you aren't used to the S3/S4 screen size.
