192 any good?

I am also looking at 192. Will be using it primarily for skype in the evening and obviously also browsing and a limited amout of email. Won't download at all (we have 1024 diginet at the office - I do all the heavy lifting there).
You guys recon it will do the trick for Skype to London? - this is my main concern.

384 i reckon then... Skype was terrible tonight, but its probably shaping, so 384 will also be affected then

Thanks. If you think it is a shaping issue, I don't want to pay the extra for 384 and see no improvement.

Is there anybody with 192 that has used skype to london. What were you experience like? I live in Durbanville (Cape Town), 200m from exchange - if that would make a difference.

Oh, last thing. What is the verdict these days with self install of dsl. I don't feel like paying telkom R404 to come and plug in my own dsl modem into my own existing phone line. Is there a way around this?

Thanks for the help.....

Well i must say that i am NORMALLY very happy with skyping to london, but as i said tonight it was choppy(but still acceptable). What gets to me is that they could hear me perfectly, but i couldnt here them properly(choppy)Shouldnt this be the otherway round? because theoretically I am sending them data @ 64kbps and receivin theirs @ 192Kbps... i dont know but IMO its shaping :( . Why dont you get 192 and if you arent happy with it upgrade to 384(its free to upgrade), but if you get 384 and want to downgrade its gonna cost ya

Thanks.
Think I must at least give 192 a try - can always upgrade like you say.
Which ISP should I use? Don't need more than 2 or 3 gb I presume.
How much bandwidth does skype use?

Sorry for all the questions, and thanks for all the help!

Its cool...
I think its about 10MB UL and 10MB DL per hour.
Well if your not a heavy downloader any isp should be fine.
I would reccomend Axxess or Webafrica though

OK, cool.
Judging from the usage you quote, I should get away with very little bandwidth.
I may go with MWeb. I know they just resell IS, but already have an account with them for dailup and email - maybe I can keep my email address.
Will definitely check out the two you mention though.

Thanks for the help!

Only our down-stream is shaped, and not up-stream. Thats why with Skype the person on the other end of the line will hear you 100%, but the quality on your side will be poor. I have exactly the same problem Skyping to London.

Anyone that want to get an ADSL line for primarily Skype should seriously consider an unshaped account, not reliable/usable on a normal shaped account.

Could someone please comment on the voice quality of MSN Messenger when calling overseas (PC to PC).
