whoiswarren, how much did you bribe him for it?

Haha, he had his laptop with him and runs too the window and shouts "wow the exchange must be really close hey, what's going on here???"

Then he called some other tech to make sure I only got my 192! :D

OK seems that it worked, I managed to get proof without having to even call them, they sent it via email. Seems that my exchange is only 512k enabled, but that works fine for me at the moment.

Send a comment to them at this address: http://www.telkom.co.za/app/webmastermail/
and select "general" where it asks you to select a category

I sent them the following:
To whom it may concern

I am currently on DSL192 and plan on upgrading my DSL line soon to DSL512 or DSL1024. I currently have a few prospective clients whose terms include that my DSL line be capable of transfer speeds of at least 512kbps (due to large quantities of data that need to be transferred relatively quickly, hence the upgrade). Is it possible to please send through proof confirming that it is indeed capable?

My line number is (***)***-**** should any tests need to be conducted remotely. I can also be contacted on the above number should there be a need for further correspondence.
Thank you for your time

Kind regards
Mr X. XXX
To which I received the following email:
Good morning *****

Please find attached e-mail as requested.

Please not that your exchange is only DSL 512 compatible.

We thank you for you enquiry and interest in Telkom and please feel free to contact us should you require any further information.

Kind regards

So go with whichever excuse you guys think would work for you, or feel free to use mine and make a few small changes so that they don't suspect anything out of place. Good luck!

Some Direction

While most people don't have any concrete evidence / information other than what was told to them by the call centre staff, I have some more detail from a old varsity friend who works for Telkom.

If I understood and remember everything correctly, it goes as follows:
Telkom has a system that controls the whole ADSL network. They basically have to push one button and in the span of a few hours the entire network will be updated. The change will happen on 1 August and will have the following characteristics: (only applicable to 192Kbps customers only)
The network will negotiate a sync-speed with your modem. If the two are capable of chatting at 384Kbps, you will have yourself a shiny new 384Kbps connection. Should your line be to long or have too much noise, the network will scale back in increments of 64Kbps until it can talk to your modem again. (With a minimum threshold of 192Kbps)
This all happens in a couple of seconds when you turn on your modem.

This new service will specify "Up to 384Kbps" to cater for the limited number of cases where the network is unable to supply the full 384Kbps to the customer. Preliminary tests have supposedly already been done which shows that more than 99% of the customers will be able to sync at the full 384Kbps rate on 1 August.

I would urge most people in this forum to please stop moaning and throwing conspiracy theories around. In the case of this upgrade to 384Kbps it will actually involve thousands of times more work to upgrade individual lines than to just upgrade the whole network all at once. I don’t know about you, but that alone should convince you as I do not see how people would go about and intentionally complicate things for themselves.

Thats absolute horse rubbish, how the heck is Telkom going to support it;s IPTV offerings at that slow speed. ADSL should be able to hit 8mb/s prehaps even more.

I'll do this now and see what Teklom say to me... I am literally about 500m away from an exchange so hmmm...

I know it's bull but that was their reply. But since they basically said it's capable of 512kbps, now they can't lie and say that it's not possible when it's time to upgrade me from 192 to 384.

Well, they called me today and told me about the reductions. I asked whether my exchange was capable of 384Kbps to which the reply was yes. I also asked if the upgrade would be "automatic" on the first...the agent said yes it would be. So ja lets see on 1 August then

I put in my order to be upgraded today. With Telkom lead times it should be done by the 1st of August.

Relax!!!

The phrase "Your exchange is 512 capable" actually refers to the SDC "Street Distribution Cabinet" or the "Blue and Green Telkom Box on the street corner". What they are actually trying to say is that the copper connecting to that box has been tested and rated according to speeds attainable up to that point (While only testing for the speeds on offer 192, 384, 512 and 1M). It means that if you connect to that box, you should be able to get 512, it does NOT specify your maximum attainable speed.

Those tests were most probably also done before the introduction of the 1M service, so they only tested up to 512. If you live 500m from the exchange (not the SDC, the actual exchange) you should be able to get about 10Mbps, even though they will only say "your exchange is 512 capable"

Capish?
