1971 VW Beetle restore

My dad's 1971 beetle was in quite a bad accident 2 years back, and it just sat. It is quite badly rusted and has some body damage, mostly fixable though. More importantly the engine starts but the thing doesn't get into gear. I have 0 clue about cars, but would really like to read a bit about maybe trying to fix this before my dad gets it scraped (he wants to keep the car but doesn't want to spend 20 000 rand to get it running again). Anyone know where I can maybe find a service manual for the car? I am thinking if its a small job to get the car running i might change my dads mind on selling it and we can get the body sorted out! If anyone is interested i do have pics, but its a very sad sight.

I doubt reading the car manual will help fix the car. And to get the body repaired will be expensive. Not worth it. Better off buying another one.

See you can get them for as little as 10k in running cond... Gonna scrap it, maybe sell that engine separately.

Depending on how bad the chassis damage is, you could turn it into quite a nice beach buggy.

I've just done up a 1971 Mini. Cost me an arm and a leg, but has been worth it.
