Dear Clever Guys :D

I have a problem with my Corolla's engine performance. (fuel-injected 1600cc).

The symptoms is as follows : engine idles and revs (under no load) 100%

However, when it is under load, it will come to 2000rpm, then start stuttering a little bit (with very little accelerator load ~ around 1/6th of accelerator)

When I push the pedal to half, the engine feels as if it's cutting out, almost like you get with fuel starvation. But if I push the pedal fully down, the car will accelerate, but with major loss of power.

When cruising, the engine cuts out, then starts again, then will work for a while, then cut out again.

The fuel filter was replaced recently, but the issue already started then.

Downhills it is a bit noticeable, but with slight uphills the engine skrik sommer groot :(

Can it be something with the airflow sensor?

I haven't noticed any serious increase in fuel consumption, the recent long road trip I got 350kms on 17l of fuel (100km/h all the way)...

I want to hear what you guys say, maybe there's somebody who recently had the same issue with his/her car?

Regards

Which engine do you have? 4A-FE?

Valve stem seals was recently overhauled. Engine doesn't use oil.

FWIW.
Have the fuel pump checked.

Had a look at the OWM (owners workshop manual) and it's a biggie to replace the fuel pump if it really is the fuel pump.

But it is easy to check. Will ask a friend of ours (he works with cars) to check the pump performance as it might be caused by this.

Yip, 4A-FE. I certainly do hope it's not the fuel pump. There are other strange noises creeping in too, so I may have to bite the bullet and take it in to Toyota. I really don't trust the okes at Hatfield though :(

Sounds like plug leads/plugs
Possibly distributor also
Fuel pump
vacuum leak
injectors need cleaning
or ECU
Any of these fixes are relatively cheap.
Good luck man

hi. i had the same problem with my 95" 160i - 4AFE.....i changed the fuel pump twice and it still gave me a hassle.Turns out it was the coil in the distributor that was cracked. now it runs as smooth as ever :D:D

Had a similar problem with my 180i, it was the throttle body.

Inside was a build up of sludge ,preventing the gate from opening and closing freely.

Sprayed with some solvent based cleaner and rag ,all good afterwards.
