1mb Lines

Do any of the providers have a good price on a 1mb line, 4mb is slightly out of my budget I cannot afford paying over R1000 per month for internet, and 384kb is horribly slow, 512 is not much of an improvement.

Unfortunately you will pay Telkom the same line rental for a 1mb or a 4mb line. You will essentially be buying a 4mb line which would be throttled to 1mb by the ISP.

If you are looking for ADSL, then those are your options I'm afraid. There is no reduction in price if you don't want 4mbps. You will still pay R413/m if you have a 1mbps line with telkom...

Well if you want fixed line, you don't have much of an option if you are on a budget. Telkom is your only bet, and they only supply, as you said 384k, 512k and 4/10mb lines. I would suggest you look at CellC if speed is what you after, their 3G deals are really the best alternative right now.
