Hi

If you send me your contact number I can arrange for a consultant to call you and set you up with a 7 day trial account for you to test with.

Sticky thread would be great.

Searched for 1mbps isp but not many hits that is relevant.
Does MWEB throttle lots?
What is the fair usage Gb's amount?
What happens when you reach your limit?

Then also how does Axxess and Afrihost compare?

We do not throttle our uncapped accounts we make use of shaping, with P2P, torrents given a lower priority.
There is no fair use policy GB amount, as long as you do not bypass our shaping rules and abide by our AUP then you are welcome to download as much as you can.

Thanks MWEB Guy, abide by our AUP? What is that and shaping rules i guess that is where people download to sites and then get it as port 80?

Thanks, will send you a msg.

If anyone else know Afrihost, Axxess or some other isp's that is worth a look please let me know.

If you can get openweb 1mb standard uncapped on IS backbone you got a winner.

I think when it comes to price and performance you look at Mweb 1mb uncapped and openweb 1mb uncapped [via IS backbone]. Openweb 1mb uncapped via IS is pure joy for me. In fact I prefer using this account even for gaming cause it gives me best performance even with the loads of downloads I do.

I use an axxess just uncapped 4 meg account, and it is fantastic. I only really use the IS Steam server and youtube, and I game quite a lot. I find that the pings I get on the axxess account are much better than other accounts. (11ms on axxess, 30-40 on my mweb account, but this is purely because I live in Sandton I think).

I pull 80-110 gigs a month (granted mostly local), and I haven't been the victim of any shaping/throttling for the two years or so since I've had it.

Sorry to hijack!

MWebGuy: my ISP is Cybersmart and they also 'control' the router. Can we set up a trial account for me in this scenario? I'd like to test your speed for normal browsing and torrents before I switch. Also, do you only shape torrents?

In order for this to work you will need to unlock the router.
Torrents, P2P and nntp are given a lower priority on our uncapped accounts.

If you're willing to pay a little extra, go for OpenWeb Gold Uncapped. This is by far the best option for uncapped -bar fully unshaped uncapped accounts, of course.
On Gold uncapped, they don't mind if you "bypass" the shaping -unlike mweb. If mweb finds out what you're up to, you will be warned. If you continue, you will most likely be cut off. No such worries with OW Gold -if downloading and gaming is your main mission.
Another plus point with the Gold account is in the event that the network slows down, you can very easily be placed on other backbones. (SAINET, Neology, IS, Vodacom, ALtech, to name a few.) If you get slow speeds on mweb, that's it...you're stuck...no options.
Hope this helps you to make an informed decision :)

sSslik, you will have to contact CyberSmart about acquiring unlocked Firmware. what make and model is it?

whether or not they will be willing to give it to you is a different story. but you will first have to try.

if that fails, go out and buy a proper router from Linksys, netgear, or D-Link. all are brilliant quality, and will benefit you in the long run.

also, I have the exact same package that OP is requesting with MWEB.

Must say, best internet ever. no downtime so far, setup was quick, torrents get a bit of a low priority, but at night and on weekends they fly.

not a single problem. one happy MWEB customer here.

HI there
Same here with M-web. Joined beginning of month. Download mainly on weekends, already 30 gig. Browse during week at night, must say it is really nice to just sit and browse with no fuss. It is only youtube, that I have problem with, but the rest is okay so far

Thanx Mweb

I have Netgear router (my own). Cybersmart is merely 'managing' the ADSL line. Do I still need to contact Cybersmart?

No. If you have access to your router you can change the username and password. The fact that you pay the ISP for your line aswell does not mean anything and you are most certainly not locked to them.
