Notebook users will be glad to hear that hard drive manufacturers Western Digital yesterday announced the release of a 1TB notebook drive.

The SATA hard drive, which is complimented by a smaller 750GB version, forms part of the company’s Scorpio Blue range and measures in at 2.5 inches. It also features a 12.5 mm form factor as well as lower power consumption and operating temperatures as well as better shock absorption.

“The convergence of the growing mobile computing and digital media trends produces demand for desktop-like capacities in portable devices,” said Jim Morris, senior vice president and general manager of client systems at WD. “Our new WD Scorpio Blue drives enable people to take even more of their digital collections with them wherever they go.”

This announcement is sure to set off debate surrounding the benefits of solid state drives or larger capacity SATA drives in notebooks. Last week Intel revealed that it had made a breakthrough in the production of 34nm Nano Chips which would contribute to a 60% drop in the current cost of solid state drives.

Currently Intel is targeting a cost of $137 (R1,056) for the initial 80GB model. In comparison, Western Digital’s new 2.5 inch 1TB notebook drive is set to retail at $249 (R1,919) and its 750GB version at $189.99 (R1,464).

These developments will undoubtedly prompt notebook users to make the choice between the unrivalled speed found in solid state drives or the capacity for cost found in conventional SATA models.
