1X500GB or 2x250GB RAID-0?

for my line of work raptor raid is just freakin insane

And your line of work is?

I don't think that for my situation a Raptor will be worth it. Basically all I want is a significant increase in speed, I'd make a backup clone of the drive using Acronis True Image every month or so, so even if data was lost it's no biggie.

raid 0 is worth it for sure

you will notice your system to be alot more responsive, apps load faster

i dont suugest raiding 2 x 250gig drives to be honest

you should raid 80 or 160 gig drives nothing higher

problem with raid 0 is not that the drives fail because your 500gb hdd could also fail but if your mobo fails your screwed basically

raid 0 should not be used for anything but windows games and programs, should not be for any type of storage
Funny, the guys in PC Format, Louis, would disagree with you. And yes, it one drive fails they both fail.

No, they don't. If one drive fails, the logical drive is rendered useless (the second drive can still be used as a standalone) and data is lost but as someone previously (and correctly) said, HDD uptime for normal home end-users is 2-5 years so if you buy a decent hard drive the whole failure argument is a moot point.

failure point is rubbish, there is more chance of your mobo failing than your raid config

marine have u used raid 0? if not maybe go try it out and come back and tell me some random oke disagree's

i dont care what ppl say, i have used raid 0 and still use it and its faster

killadoob, are you using a hardware or a software RAID config?

How easy was it to set up?

im not sure feo

i used the setup just after the bios posted, so im assuming thats software

o yea man its really easy

you just need to enable raid on your mobo and then whatever your mobo needs to get into the raid config just after your splash screen

then select your 2 drives, bam 1 raid drive

only problems comes in with windows xp you need a stiffy drive to install the drivers or you need to slipsteam an xp disk with them

i use vista but i know it was pain in xp, atleast vista you can use a usb stick

"and now you know why we tell people that's it's pretty foolish to use raid 0 as your boot drive."

i have used raid for nearly 4 years and never had it fail

raid0 has as much failure as any normal standard single drive

raid0 is not dangerous, its not more dangerous than your 80 160 250 500 750 and 1tb failing

when u raid your drives, use it for your main OS programs and games, dont store data on it and just like any hdd, make frequent back ups

i have seen more dead single drives than raided hdd's

theres 2x more risk of you losing your data though, as any single drive failure and you're screwed...

also onboard raid isnt the greatest performance wise if you dont have a decent processor to go with it, since its software based and you're using your CPU's i/o

Raid 0 is not worth the extra performance, unless you're running raptors. Period.
I've had 2 x 80gb in Raid 0 a while back, performance was not even noticeable ;)

i think before ppl put it down, you should try it and think for yourself if its any good

i have used raptors for awhile now but i know 2 x 80 gig hdd's in raid makes a difference
