I bought a 2.5" Coolermaster Xcraft SATA external enclosure and Seagate Momentus drive and I've noticed that there is a red flashing light on the drive itself (can see it though the front of the enclosure). This light flashes all the time, not only when the drive is being accessed. Anybody have any ideas on what it means? Apparently it may have something to do with insufficient power being supplied to the drive but the enclosure has a 2-plug USB cable (second for power only) and it flashes even with both connected to a powered USB hub.

There was a manufacturing fault on those units whereby several grams of radioactive nuclear fissile material was accidentally built into the platter of the drive. Don't worry, the unit only flashes red when the radioactivity peaks beyond 7000 REM cycles.

Do you by any chance have a geiger counter close by? or a radioactive hazard suit?

I did check my geiger counter already and its registering normal levels so I thought that couldn't be the problem which is why I didn't mention it :)

I wouldn't stress about it if the drive is working fine....unless you got the "not enough power story from the manual".

Remember not to move the drive while its spinning.;)

Can happen when the drive isn't getting enough power. If it has two USB connectors connect them both or check the external power.

My bad I didn't read your whole post. Does it do the same thing plugged into another PC? My external drive works fine on the two ports on the left hand side of my HP but not so good on the right.

I had an issue recently that my geiger screams like mad whenever I bring it close to my head. I went to the doctor and she told me I have a problem. I went to the science teacher at the local school and she said.... oh %%%%%! I then went to Pelindaba and they told me to stop sniffing their plant exhausts. It's making my brain radioactive...

:D
