2 adsl accounts - 1 modem - ISP is Mweb

Hi there.

I currently have the following ...

1 X Mweb Uncapped 512k account
1 X Mweb Capped 1gb account

The Uncapped I use for torrents and what not and since it is heavily shaped one cannot run connection via Cisco VPN software to VPN's and I am not in the mood to break Mweb's shaping policies.

I got the capped account that is not as heavily shaped just for VPN use for now.

Aside from using Route Sentry on Win7 and not that I am lazy to put the router (Planet ADN-4000) into bridge mode , is there any other way of having both accounts online at the same time.

Speed is not too much of an issue as Sun's Tarantella should handle it , also the uncapped downloads in business hours are not that fast anyways so I should have decent speedily use of the capped bandwidth account whilst connecting to the office.

Thoughts , ideas and what not.

separate laptop/PC for browsing = 1GB unshaped. It's slow, but works.

You have separate PCs or do you want to force different programs to use different connections on the same PC?

In my opinion, turning your router into bridged mode is the easiest option right now. It will mean that you can dial-up using a PPPoE connection so you can choose which connection to use when. I currently use this at home.

Not sure how you can be "too lazy" to switch your router into bridged mode though, as it probably took more effor to type your first post than it would take to turn your router into bridged mode.

Hehe.
I was lazy.
In the WAN options there is the following that once ticked allows what I need -> Bridge PPPoE Frames Between WAN and Local Ports
This then allows me to connect with the unshaped capped account one 1 pc whilst allowing the uncapped shaped account detail to remain on the Planet ADN-4000 so that the torrents can resume.
Cisco VPN seems to connect seeminglessly again.
If Vodacom had decent 3G/HSPDA coverage in my area which seems to come and go then this would not have been neccessary as the corporate APN would take care of it.

1 laptop does the downloading.
the other laptop does all the required work connecting via VPN and so on and so on.

I dial my connections.

With RouteSentry you can only split local and international traffic, which is probably not a good choice for the 2 accounts that you have.

I'm not sure if the Planet ADSL routers can dial multiple PPPoE accounts. Most ADSL routers' web interfaces only allow like up to 20 static routes, where you require like 600+ to be able to split local and international traffic.

If the Planet ADSL router supports PPPoE Relaying/Pass-through (aka half-bridge mode), then you can dial the second account from your PC without having to set the router in bridge mode.

With a proper router (eg. MikroTik / ones running DD-WRT/OpenWRT / PC running Smoothwall or IPCop), you can split the traffic according to the protocol/port.
With those kind of setups you can also schedule the routes to change during certain times of day. eg: 1GB during office hours and uncapped after hours.

I'm really curious of what that Planet ADN-4000 router is capable of, since its currently the cheapest ADSL2+ router thats got 300Mbps Wireless N!

Nice to see that it has the same naming as the D-Link routers for enabling PPPoE pass-through: "Bridge PPPoE Frames Between WAN and Local Ports" !

What I like about it is that the wifi antennas are built in and don't stick out.
Aesthetically its not the most beautiful device BUT it works and works well.
I'm not using 1/4 of its functions anyways but the price is good for the features that it does have.

Thanks. I actually already knew that you can get it from Scoop, because that's where I bought all my MikroTik routers from.

If you can tell me what you want to do with the 2 accounts, I might be able to help you out.
