2 Day old HTC M8 over heating. Please help

Hey,

My M8 is over heating. Power the phone on and waiting for the "android is upgrading apps" message causes it to over heat.

Going into the playstore and downloading apps causes it to overheat. I haven't even done a resource intensive task like gaming yet.

Is this normal?Who repairs Htc devices in SA?

Yea I think I have to. It was delivered to me from Vodacom online and this is the one time I wish I dealt with a store.

Vodacom discounted the M8 on their topup contract & I upgraded. It is probably the last batch of stock in their warehouse.

It is new as in unopened and from Vodacom.

I am aware that the phone was released last year.
 
It is normal. Most modern phoned heat up when performing even seemingly mundane tasks. Especially so with the M8 as its aluminium chasis conducts heat to the fingers.

But it gets really hot dude.

I tried everything aswell. Updated a stage freight patch, wiped cash and factory reset.

It is on android 5.0.2

Maybe this is a lollipop issue. I hope Vodacom releases the Marshmallow update soon.
 
I have an M8 that's just over a year old now, and mine doesn't get hot. Warm maybe, but not hot. And that's only when it's charging, or I'm playing a game on it.

If you go to settings >> power >> battery usage, do you see any apps using an abnormal amount of battery? Perhaps something else is happening in the background that shouldn't. It's just a guess.

Could also be a hardware fault. The first one I got had speaker issues, as did the second one. It was third time lucky for me.

Thanx. Did htc or the network swap the faulty phones?

I hope Vodacom is helpful.
 
Keep us posted OP. I've returned a phone before that I got via MTN Online.

OBF returns are pretty quick. If you leave it too long.. ja... Nightmares :eek:

I dealt with the Orange store, which is a rather lengthy story. They didn't argue with me about the faults, they just exchanged the phone, at no charge to me. It just took a while.

Good luck with getting it swapped though, I'm sure you'll come right.
 
if you have a memory card in it...remove it...and take it from there. My M8 started doing some really weird stuff, including heating up like a hot plate....turned out to be an issue with the memory card.

I'm using the iPhone 6, really thin with no cover and it never gets hot weather browsing or playing video games. OP That's not normal, return the phone and get a replacement.

The "upgrading apps" message has to do with the ART compiling and caching app data before use, both my Nexus 7 and Nexus 5 got pretty warm when doing this. Updating apps from the Play Store is basically performing a similar task as what the "upgrading apps" message does, so I doubt there's cause for concern just yet. Try using GSam battery monitor and CPU Spy to see what's going on. If it keeps doing it even once apps have been installed and the ART runtime has finished optimizing your apps, then I'd go the RMA route.

That's a bit of an apples and oranges (excuse the pun) comparison given the iPhone has only one similarity with the m8 (being metal) and in all other respects is completely different, hence recommending something on that basis is quite a poor call.
