Hi guys

I'm having a bit of an issue trying to use 1 IP address and give it 2 dns entries. Can this actually be done.
What we are trying to do is use a SQL server with a DRP (Disaster Recovery) server and for the DRP server I need to create an alias, for instance the servers original name is "ServerA" and now I need to create an alias "DRPA" for "ServerA", but using the original IP 12.10.1.1

How do I go about doing this on on our domain controller as a dns record using a static IP. I can do this in a hosts file, but my manager would prefer a seperate dns entry.

Definatley can be done.
I don't understand why you're having difficulty though.

As far as i understand your problem you can just create a new A record on your DNS server and point it to that IP. U using windows server ?

Thanks for the responses. Well to be very honest I am still new to managing a domain and dont really know to go about setting this up. What I have tried to do, log onto my domain controller and navigate to the DNS application from administrative tools. And then from there I found the DNS PTR for the server, but what I dont know how do is add an Alias for that IP address.

My Domain controller is Server 2003 and the IP I am trying to create the alias is Server 2008. My Domain Controller will be upgraded to Server 2008 in the next few weeks as well.

You don't want a PTR.
You want to add two A Records for the same IP.

PTR is for ip address to name so you can only have 1.

Not entirely wrong or correct.

PTR points an ip address to a name. True.
However you can have an IP also point to multiple names, having multiple PTR records for the same IP. It is just not used widely, though we have some customers asking for their own dns server names, instead of setting up multiple DNS servers, we just use the same ones and add multiple PTR records so they can be used with CO.ZA to register domain names with, just as one example.

You can assign a 100 dns names to one ip if you so wish.
