My friend and I would like to create a network using our existing DSL routers via wireless as we we live within range. This is the setup;
1. I have a wireless ADSL router with my broadband connection.
2. He has the same.
3. Both routers are wireless, so connection to each other is possible.

My theory is if we use extended antenna's for the routers to see each other, they should be able to communicate if ip's are within range. So, if I use my internet gateway on my PC and he his, we should be on the same network using seperate (each others) broadband connections right?

It's possible to use both although the problem is you actually need a router in between the two networks to load balance, else connecting the two network is about impossible, seeing as there will almost certainly be a DHCP conflict and if there isn't one of the two routers will be setup VIA DHCP as the path to the internet.

You should have a look at the likes of IPCop and other such PC router software (can't remember the other programs names :confused: perhaps some forumites can help) if you don't want to spend money buying a proper hardware router to do the job.

Depends on whether the routers will connect to each other. Don't just assume that because they're wireless they should connect to each other.

What is the general aim of this setup? Load balancing, or fallover support?

Neither, we would like to use it for file sharing mostly, and occassional gaming over lan. Why do you say the 2 routers won't see each other? Theoretically they should cos' they both connectable. Like having 2 hardwired routers seperating 2 subnets. :confused:

Isnt a router setup to be an access point? not like a station? therefore you cannot search for other networks with the router?

Maybe not, but is there no way to sort of use the wireless as an "uplink" connection to create 1 network?

Ah I see you don't want to share internet connections you want to keep them separate, but you want to be able to access each others networks?

Precisely, do you think it's possible?
