Think dvi splitter will only let you clone the screens. So if you want different info on each screen you're gonna have to get a pc.

It also depends on your laptop. Like my Dell Inspiron 9400 has both DVI & VGA outputs, so I can have 3 monitors (1920x1200) at the same time :D

What laptop do you have? I'd guess that if you have a fairly new one that it has HDMI & VGA outputs?

No, a notebook docking station /port replicator will also work - 2 separate screens, not cloning.

As mentioned, a DVI splitter will only let you display the same info on two screens. A standard Docking Station is unlikely to support two external monitors as well as the LCD.

The best solution for non-gaming requirements would be to use a USB docking station to add an extra monitor, such as those made by Plugable, or any others that you may come across that include video out.

Hence the link to the Matrox unit: http://www.matrox.com/graphics/en/products/gxm/dh2go/

Ignore my previous post. With the default Win7 drivers, my laptop can't have 1 desktop extended over 3 displays. I can extend over 2 screens, but the 3rd one has to be duplicated.

Perhaps installing the proprietary ATI drivers might fix this issue?

I am still deciding what route to go ,Laptop/desktop.looking at cost and practicality.I am looking at a laptop with only one ext screen(vga)port, the graphics need not be of top quality but resolution needs to be appropriate. It is quite easy to hookup 3 monitors to a desktop, but a laptop ads portabilty

If you want a laptop, then the max you will be able to do natively will be 2 displays, the laptop screen being one of them.

In that case, either the Matrox device above, or a USB docking station will be required to get your desired 3 screens. If you do one extra screen via the laptop's external port, then you can get a cheaper USB docking station, otherwise the Matrox sounds like a nice solution.
