Let's say a friend of mine lost his ID card and then went to Home Affairs to get a replacement card. Then days later while waiting for the new one to arrive the dumbass found it in his house because he didn't do a thorough search previously. So now he already paid for the replacement and has the original.

Can he use both or is the older one invalid now for say elections, applying for credit, etc.?

Should just be a duplicate card and still be valid, IIRC. Not sure about legality though.

No, it'll work, for now. Each ID card has a document number (on the back, above the barcode, below the issue date). In future, this might be validated and then the older card should be invalid, but it's currently not the case.

maybe this is still being done for those of us with ID books still,

when the system gets rolled out to those of us with dual citizenships, it might get enforced.
