2 ISPs in the same house?

Hi there guys, I've recently become aquainted with my new 512k Uncapped (openweb.co.za) ISP package and I was wondering if I could do the following...

1) Upgrade to the 1mb/4mb line.
2) Use one ISP (the uncapped one limited to 512k) to run my downloads and
3) Use the other ISP (cybersmart.co.za, 4mb circuit) to surf.

Is this possible? Reason being that the downloads will run 24/7 on the uncapped line and I want to be able to surf at high speeds on the remainder of the 4mb speed. I assume of course that since it is two different ISPs and there will obviously be 2 different usernames and passwords I will require two routers. Is it possible to connect these 2 routers in the same house and possibly on the same line? Is there any other way I could go about it?

Much appreciated
Linden

2 routers on the same line isn't possible (one of them won't sync.) You'll need to use 1 router in bridge mode. Unless you use 2 machines (one for 24/7 downloading, one for surfing), you'll need to do some real fancy routing which I wouldn't recommend.

But would openweb allow him to use a 512 uncapped account on a 4mb line...?

You could easily do it using one router in bridged mode but why go through the extra expense? The overheads in normal browsing hardly justify the second ISP.

Hi, first of all, I wasn't really looking for criticism.

1) "You'll need to use 1 router in bridge mode", how would I go about doing that?

2) "Unless you use 2 machines", that would be a perfectly acceptable alternative. How could I do that?

3) "But would openweb allow him to use a 512 uncapped account on a 4mb line...?", what does that have to do with the price of eggs? It is capped on openweb's side at 512 so my line speed doesn't affect them at all.

4) "You could easily do it using one router in bridged mode ", again, how?

5) "The overheads in normal browsing hardly justify the second ISP", it's gonna cost me an extra R300 or R400 at the most and it's for a 3.5mb increase in line speed. I think that more than justifies it.

I've tried to answer all the responses as effectively as I could. Your further support would be greatly appreciated :)

If using two pcs is ok with u, then run one for downloads and another for browsing. Put your router in bridge mode and setup broadband connections from each pc: one with the openweb account, another with the browsing account. Check your router's manual or search this forum/google

Putting the router in bridged mode differs from model to model. I would use the manual as reference and ask more specific questions if you can't figure it our. Alternatively you could give us your router model and make and if someone is friendly enough he will walk you through it.

You also have to make a "dial up" connection from your computer once the router is in bridged mode ;)

i have 512 uncapped account.
downloading at 300+KB/s on a 4mb line

ettienem, what ISP are you with? and they don't mind?

To everyone that offered help on the bridge mode of the router, I must apologise when I say that you were right, it is going to cause more hassles than it's worth. To ettienem, what ISP are you with?

IMO, it's worth the minor hassle.
Your assumptions about how it would work are correct. As for whether or not you can actually get more than the "throttled to 512kb/s" from your uncapped account, I don't know.

Setting your router to bridge mode is a simple matter of going into its configuration, changing an option (see your router manual for a how-to) and rebooting the router. Once that is done, create a pppoe connection from the "24/7 download" machine using the uncapped account. Create a pppoe connection from the other machine(s) using the other account.

And that's it. Not a hassle, AFAIAC. There are variations on this to provide more transparent setup for the "non downloading" machine(s).
