Then are you sure we're taking about the same lens? IIRC there was a (now discontinued) APO 170-500mm F5-6.3 DG.

Apparently the 150-500 was a considerable improvement on its predecessor.

The 150-500 is definitely not "superb" it is just very good. I would love a lens that is 50-500 F2.8

It's just the evolution of the 170-500 - better optics, OS, HSM, and 20mm extra range. So quite a lot.
