I have two pc's that have the same everything, except for different ram and different cpu clock speeds. My line is shared between the two.

The problem is that when my line is bad, the one pc's connection will hang, while the other one doesn't. I have checked registry settings, network settings/drivers. Tried the one pc without anything else connected, same problem.

Does anyone have any idea what I could do or try?

I am seriously frustrated here, I can't use the other pc for the time my internet is bad, which is 18 hours a day.:(:mad:

What do you mean by your internet being bad? High latency? Dropped packets?

Also could you be more specific about what you experience when the connections hangs? Are you saying you are getting dropped packets on one machine while the other isn't?

High latency and lost packets, on both pc's for 18 hours a day.

The one pc, lets say I am connected to a server, my latency goes from 300-1800, it just stops reporting the latency and pings out. With the other pc I get the same latency, but it never pings out.

Both connected over ethernet and using the same make of ethernet card?

Also, what are you using for your routing and NAT?

Yes both connected through ethernet, both have the same ethernet cards and motherboards.

What am I using for routing? Sorry but do you mean my router? And are you asking if NAT is enabled on my router? If not could you please clarify a little. Sorry if I am being annoying, just want to make sure.

NAT is enabled on router, my router is a D-link 2540-u.

I see the NAT option, nothing at "Virtual Servers", "Port Triggering" or "DMZ Host".

Edit: at "Routing" option on my router, it is assigned to "Enable Automatic Assigned Default Gateway".

I really appreciate your replies so far.

Yeah I meant your router.

During these periods where one computer loses connectivity, is it just to internet destinations? Can you ping your router at those times with no latency or packet loss?

It is only to internet destinations, I can ping my router without any latency or packet loss at those times.

If it helps to know, I have tried different ports on the router, but only that pc is having these extreme issues. LAN through the router works 100% all the time.

That is quite strange. I assume your router is handling DHCP as well? Do you notice your PCs getting different IPs often or are they more constant?

On your PC that loses connection can you do DNS lookups during the times without connection or do they fail as well?

Yes it is handling dhcp, my i.p addresses are constant as far as I've noticed over the years.

Haven't tried a DNS lookup while it hangs. But I am going to have to assume that it works. Seeing as I can browse while it hangs, just can't ever get a constant connection without it hanging. And can be connected with the one forever, while the other fails after merely minutes, both to the same server.

And it only hangs, in the 18 hours that my connection is shaped/bad. Out of that time I really cannot see any difference between the two.

I have tried that Jim. Both pc's with eset and avg, nothing came up.

I have to say I am stumped as I can't think of a reason for extreme packet loss on one machine and not the other if your internal network is sound, as it must be if you don't experience the problem constantly.

One last question, do you still experience the problem on this PC if the other one is off?

Yes I experience these issues even if only that pc is connected to the router.

Well, thank you anyways. I really really appreciate it. Think I will go ahead and just change my isp, seeing as my connection is horrible for most of the time. Last question from me, any isp you would recommend? I am with cybersmart at the moment, and have grown to despise them.

I've been using mweb uncapped since it came out and it is generally good despite the odd seacom disaster.

One last thing to check. Is there anything configured under the quality of service settings on your router?

Maybe rerouting your lan cable or change it?
Maybe it is damaged or there is some interference?

Lan cables are fine. Tried putting Qos on and off, left it off, seeing as it makes no difference.

Will change isp at some point. It will probably be fine then, seeing as it's fine when my line isn't being completely ruined by cybersmart. Having my connection screwed for 18 hours a day is just wrong.
