Please bear with my lack of know-how on all things ADSL:

When (or should I say, if) I finally get my ADSL installed, I wanted to use a normal 3 gig shaped account for the 3 other people on my home network, and an unshaped 1 gig account for myself. I believe that it's possible to use these 2 accounts simultaneously on one router, and that my router (Billion 5102) supports this - can't recall the exact terminology here, I think it's bridging or switching.

However, a friend of mine mentioned that if I use 2 accounts simultaneously, I wil lose the functionality of the router's firewall, as it will now be functioning like a simple modem. Is there no way to use 2 accounts simultaneously, while maintaining some security online? Would it be better just to pay a bit more and just get 4 gigs unshaped?

Thanks in advance!

I think your friend is correct - however, a software firewall can be just as effective - more so in some cases - than the router's firewall.

ICASA's new regulations prohibit shaping anyway. :) - http://www.mydrive.co.za/details.php?file=70 Section 5.

A router in bridged mode becomes unintelligent and cannot firewall or port-forward or NAT.
It becomes the PC dialling in through the router's responsibility to Firewall and NAT and port-forward.

When do the new regs come into effect tho?
IN theory when they were gazetted.

I use my router in a hybrid mode - it's got one shaped connection running on it for everyone to use - when I need to use my unshaped account I just initiate a pppoe from that particular computer. Everything works - best of both worlds.

@stoke - why would a router in bridged mode even need to port forward?

Bwana... any chance of a setup walkthrough? :P
