2 user accounts on 1 line?

Hi Chaps,
I need some advice from the boffins here,have been told 2 accounts can be used simultaneously on one dsl line.
I assume the ethernet port from the modem goes to a switch and then to two routers where the username and password are stored.
Can this be done and will both users get full line speed (384 or 512)or will it be shared?
If this can work could someone give me an idea of what the modems setup should look like to allow the routers username and password to authenticate and not the modem.
Any tips appreciated,

No need for 2 routers. One router/modem in bridge mode will suffice. The account details would be on individual pcs. But total line speed will be limited to the physical capacity of the line, 384 or 512, so it will be shared.

What do you want to do with the two accounts? Split traffic or just keep the accounts seperate for each user?

There are many threads in this forum dealing with these topics. Have you used the search?

In fact 2 routers wont even work on the same line.

Easiest way is to set your router to bridged mode and initiate a 'dial-up' like connection from each PC. Keep in mind though that these pc's will not be able to benefit from the hardware firewall so have a good software one installed and running at all times.
 
You just need to make a PPPoE connection on each PC,
I have 3 ADSL accounts on different PC's and I just use the default doBroadband Telkom router as my wifi modem for all PC's.

no hassles :)

Seeing that Clanser is happy, maybe I can quickly hijack his thread.
My requirement is the same, but....
I have a Netgear DG834GT (which I believe is the problem here).
i want a default 5gb shaped account on the router, for the kids, wife, xbox, myself for the normal stuff. For me (mainly gaming) I have a Webafrica 1Gb prepaid unshaped, that I will activate as needed, from my PC. Now I assume that the router has to support half-bridge (?) for me to accomplish this ? I'm not concerned about local/international here

I also have a Linksys WRT54G floating around, which I'll try and setup to link wireless to the Netgear (or whichever modem/router I end up with) so I can hook up the xbox from the living room to the 5gb account.

Which ADSL router do I replace my DG834GT with to allow me this setup ? Btw, using another PC as a gateway is not an option

So is your setup something along these lines: PC1 uses Account 1, PC2 uses Account 2, etc. So you don't split the traffic at a router level it is at a PC level?

What I want to do is:
PC 1 = International
PC 2 = International
PC 3 = Local most of the time with the option to change to International

Access Point is a Netgear DG834G Wireless ADSL Router.

Can this be achieved with just PPPoE?

I've been RTFMing a bit (Reading The FoRum, not the other 1) and it looks like my options so far are :
Netgear DG834G (with the correct firmware)
Billion 7300.. not sure which model atm
Linksys WAG200G

Correct, each PC connects to my single router using a single wireless access point and on each PC I make a PPPoE to connect to the internet, the router only gives access to the ADSL line for each PC.

That's like saying you have a random Porche lying around. With the Linksys you don't have to muck about setting up individual pcs. Your wireless router can handle all your networks traffic splitting/optimization needs and much more without you having to raise a sweat.

Will have a look at the Porche again. I was under the impression that your thread was to do something similiar to RouteSentry, but only using the Linksys to split local and intl (which I'm not too concerned about).

If I understand you right, all traffic will go thru the Linksys, which will pass it via onto the Netgear (in bridge mode). That means I lose all router functionality (i think) on the ADSL modem and have to buy another AP in any case for the xbox and to sort out connectivity from that side of the house.

Or am I totally wrong here ? With my lack of network knowledge it's very possible :D
 
From post 203 on the Linksys thread there is an interesting discussion that led Newb5000 to successfully link a Linksys router and a Telkom Mega router (acting as a modem in bridge mode, and also as an AP and switch) connecting up several PC's at opposite ends of a house. I can't be sure this is exactly what you are trying to achieve, but the solution provided by pieterbotes in the thread was simple and elegant.

As for the script, splitting traffic between int/local was the initial objective of the script, but adding an unshaped account for gaming is very easy. Splitting out local traffic is optional. When gaming you'll be using the shaped account, all your other traffic will go via the 5gb account. You just have to supply account details and the gaming server IPs to the start-up script and reboot the router. Best of all you get the full benefit of your router's firewall, with no messy dialup from each pc/console.
