Hey,

I'm looking at a 320D lately for my new car. Second hand though. Driven about 8 so far, amazing cars, but i'm a little worried...

I found one, a 2002 320D with 150 000k on the clock they giving me a decent trade in, I just want to know if it is a risky purchase at all? Driven it, it seems really good.

i know :( those facelifts are really better than the 2001 on 3 series, i'm also considering getting me one, but a 2004 version, i'm just scared about the turbo. you never know how that car has been driven and if the turbo fails, people tell its about 20k to fix

Yeah i agree thedutchman.

fxit_man i drove the 320i, it is a lot slower then the 320d and pretty heavy on fuel hey.. :(

Yeah it is pretty petrol hungry especially if you are rather flat-footed :p

Diesel just doesn't do it for me.. The big turn off is the sound.. Benefits of the 320i sound-wise outweighs the performance and fuel economy benefit of the 320d for me!

But hey, different strokes! Good luck with finding your car!

well, the 330d is just more expensive and the v6 diesel sound is pretty decent aswell. has a lot more power but also good on fuel. still, you never know about the turbo that might blow

Look for a full service history with BMW and see whether you can chat with the previous owner before buying to see whether he let it idle after driving, etc. Turbos on the BMWs are quite reliable, I think. Shouldn't have problems at all, especially down at the coast.

take VIN number down, call BMW Motorplan, and check if there are any notes on the system up until the plan ended, and check the service history from then on, should give you a pretty good idea of how the car has been since new. Also take note of the oil service intervals, happens more often than petrol cars.
You cud also take it to a BMW dealership to have the engine/transmission checked.
If all is good, buy it and just look after the turbo.
But if i am not mistaken BMW did have a problem on the turbo's on the 320d's but i think this was pre-facelift models, my cousin has a 2001 320d, bought it brand new and the turbo was changed once due to that problem, current turbo still running strong.

What are they offering you as trade-in & what is the purchase price of the BMW? What vehicle are you trading in?

yea, there were a whole bunch of turbo failures on 320d's, best to check up till what year were affected
